Is your a 1.8K? If so then the HFS wasn't an option. I think this was due to the 1.8 having a small alternator.
Yes it's an easy, if expensive retro fit.

I've fitted a HFS to my MGF race car (no heater, so needs a way of clearing the screen!) It does load the alternator when it is on, but Mk1 MGFs use a Magneti Marreli alternator rather than the later (less reliable!) Bosch version.
My FL alternator is covered in oil (that non-sealed cam ladder bleeding oil all over the exhaust side of the engine!) but it sounds like bad news. No wires is no wires. Happy to make my own loom, but it won't be as nice and straightforward.
On a more positive note, it looks as though I may be able to retrofit heated front seats...
With the MGF, I use the heated rear screen circuit to drive the HFS circuit relay. This means that the HFS will only work once the engine sensor sees an oil pressure (i.e. it is running and charging the battery via the alternator!) and will automatically switch off after about 10 minutes.There's nothing to stop you fitting one. There is also a simple 555 timer ic and a transistor / mosfet circuit that would do the same (scribble on request) lol - - - or even a capacitor and resistor / mosfet that would also workThe CCU does HFS timing. But I can't see why an independent system can't be installed. There are HRW/ HFS timers available which could be used for a retrofit
