So my ongoing and very annoying rattle from underneath front to middle at low revs has been narrowed down by me and google to be the heat shield in the engine bay, I think! Doesn't rattle on idle only when moving and in gear. But where the hell is the heat shield?? And is there just the one? It's probably staring straight at me.....sorry I'm thick.

Though I'm told it could also be the newish exhaust which I've had double and triple checked, or also the slight play in one of the steering linkage rods which is about to be replaced. To add, many mechanics have looked at this with absolutely no idea of where it's coming from. It seems to be worse when the engine has warmed up a bit, does the heat shield have fixings that could be affected by warming up?

ta everybody :)

Apologies for repeating a past thread of mine but it's sort of gone on to other things plus the title was a bit gay!

Hi,

I would say, if its on warm up and you say front to middle, then it will probably be your cataylic converter and it s breaking up, as the warmer gases go through it will move the materials around.

If not that, could be your VCU or propshaft uj's knocking once warmed up.

Check the small heat shield on the front pipe underneath the sump area, they rattle like hell when they break loose. A big hose clip sorted mine out.

the heat shield down the front in the engine compartment, keeps direct heat away from coolant pipes, radiator fan and alternator is the one your after., you might have to refit using repair washers.
