Evening, here on behalf of me mates dad, but i'll probably end up doing the work.

J reg Disco

rite here go,s

side lights work
high beam flash works, but no headlights or highbeam.
fuses seem fine, so it sounds like the switch on the stalk rite??

regretably, i can only get a hour or so at a time on the vehicle, so i thought i'd get the heads up first.

hi m8,you say fuses ok,have you checed the in line breakers in the loom on the os inner wing? if you look for a bundle wrapped in tape they were troubled by water ingress, into the soldered ends.

Hi

I would go along with the possibility of problems with the switch. I recently had to replace my switch stalks because I was having problems almost identical to your mates dad. I managed to pick up a complete set of stalks including the wiper stalk for £15 on Ebay. Good luck with it.

alllrighty. all fixed. dont know how but all fixed.

basicly, on another thread from yester year somebody mentioned the headlight relays were under the dash below the passenger glove box, so i ripped all that out to find nothing what so ever. i'm now thinking maybe there were from a left hand drive land, as i finally found them behind the side panel my the throttle.

anyway, transfixed that i could not hear any relays chattering i started tinkering, and didnt get anywhere.

like i said before, i had side lights and high beam flash, but no main beam or hi beam

by this point the stearing colum is pulled apart, fuse board out, passenger dash half out and still no joy.

on unplugging the connector from the reas of the lighting stalk some relays chattered, i was confused as the lights wernt turned on, basicly, as you connect/disconnect there is a realy chattering.

first question, what is this relay? as nothing happens and nothing is on.

second question, what colors are what, greens, purples, ets on that connector, it would be nice to just short the connector out, therefore bypassing the switch.

third question, which of the 6 relays by the throttle is/are the headlight related ones?

rite, i did say they were fixed now, because......

after being rained on for 3/4 hour i was getting narky, very narky. thinking bo**ocks to this i started putting the stering colum together, which involved removing the keys.

as i pulled the keys out main beam came on (it was switched on), so i pushed the stalk forward for high beam and nothing, main beam went and no high beam. pulled the stalk back to main bean and still darkness. bugger!

put the keys in, turned ignition on, tried the lights again, nothing, pulled the keys out and magicly high beam came on, pulled the stalk back, main beam worked, pushed it forwards high beam worked.

leaving the lights on, i put the key in, still on, turned the ignition on and they went out.

really confused by now, and getting wetter my the minute, thought bugger it, job for another day. started putting the colum back together, cranked her over to top up the battery as i'd be mucking around for over an hour by now and thought i'll just check one more time, everything worked as it should....

spent the next cup of coffee p[laying with everything, engine on, engine off lights on, lights off it all works. as it should cant fault it at all.

-so if the lights are meant to come on regardless of key position, why did the key affect these lights this time? or was that just something magic?

anyway, if someone could answer the above questions, i'll keep that data handy for when they feck up again.
