So looking at a disco 2 with 90 on the clock and no history of a head gasket changed (or any history) but it’s been well kept by an elder guy himself.

I have read the suggested miles for a head gasket change on the v8 is 75,000. Should it be an ASAP change if I buy the vehicle or is it most likely to have been fixed in the past with that number of miles, and it will keep going until signs present themselves and then just fix it. Or will it just die and water blow a piston liner in a flash So fix ASAP?.

new to landys so trying to work out how to treat them before getting burned, thanks.

As I’ve only completed a top end rebuild on my Thor V8, I’ve read other D2 owners say it is an easy job to do even if you are the least mechanically inclined.
Make sure you replace all the top end engine gaskets while replacing the head gasket. Definitely abide by the instructions and torque specs that are in the RAVE manual.
I’d also replace the old V8 “hard spring” thermostat with a gray “soft spring” Td5 thermostat that opens at 82 degrees vs. 87 degrees.

Yeah I have read about the thermostat swap, so it’s that easy no modifications needed to fit the diesel one?

My understanding of liner failure, the block cracks first, allowing coolant between the liner and the block, this acts as a lubricant and the liner can start to slip.
Any other kind of liner failure is likely to have already happened on such an old engine

Yes that's about it, It will only happen if the engine is overheated due to cooling system not being 100%… maintenance is important so nothing to do with age.

So I bought the vehicle and quite happy. It drove 300 miles some of that over London to get it down to Cornwall with no dramas with overheating or head gasket. However there is no history at all and it’s at 100k so I think I will sort it at the next opportunity.
