i reading but am i reading right?

.................when bleeding the coolant system on 1.8 petrol.....bleed screws opened.....fill coolant expansion tank untill coolant flows from steel pipe.....tighten.........continue until coolant flows from top hose by bulkhead...tighten? job done or am i missing something....read somewhere about heater being on full ..so....should engine be running for that one?..also read somewhere do not run car without expansion cap on....thus cannot have car running to have heaters on...any one shed some light on this please...when i remove the bleed screws i get a fountain from both ....should i get a trickle or fountain?.and yes im a simpleton thanks in advance.

have the engine running, first have you taken the small pipe of the header tank and blown into it to open up the jiggle valve in the cylinder head ,some people remove the jiggle valve altogether , then still have car running and open up the bleed valve with the heater in hot position and see if any bubbles come out with the water keeping a eye on header tank and add more if going low, when bubbles have stopped then tighten valve.

thanks teddywood....the jiggle valve had been removed when i took the head off......so i dont have the heaters running? just turned to hot?

Check jiggle valve as above - fill system & leave cap off - Heater on hot position - start motor and leave idling - loosen lower bleed screw [metal pipe] watch for continuous bubble-free stream, then close - check coolant level - do the same for the upper bleed screw - check coolant level.. Top as required, cap on and let idle until fans come on - they should come on at low speed after about 10 -15 mins. Check heat coming out of heater vents in cabin? = All good.

thanks chaps, when i take the valves out when engine off i get gushes from both holes....fountains even...however when engine running nothing comes from hole at top but i can see it flowing through the pipe. the heaters are still hot when on when driveing and the temp gauge doesnt move above running temp.

think il have to try again.

On the Freelander, it's actually irrelevant where the heater control is. The heater matrix is fed with hot water constantly. The heater has a flap that directs air through or around the matrix, altering the cabin temperature.
