Hi Folks

Juts bought a Sanky trailer and collecting iot att he wkend in the van but my landy comes with just a normal toeball. Anybody got a nato hitch they wana sell or know of anyone that has yin cant be arsed with fleebay!.

Also sidetrack why does my landrover battery sounds dead if cold but if you wrap it up and keep warm is fine lol??? my old transit had this problem too and it looked daft with a blanket in the hengine bay.

Any help on tha nato hook would be greatly appriciated.:)

Try Anchor supplies or search for Ex Mod supplies loads of em out there.
 
:) Thanks Redhand i will email them try gte one of them noticed a few on fleebay goign for no too much so know the rough cost now.

Can anyone help me with my battery/alternator/chagring system here what i ahve done s far. Leave the landy over night or few days battery dies goes flat. The battery warning light used to be on then it started to be random now never on so no charge. Checked the bulb its fine, wiring to alternator seems fine but will double check with voltmeter. batterys getting charged abck up as we speak one brand new other strong so count them out. took alternator out and the thing has play in it and when you soin it there is no resistance at all spins freely for ages. Until i count out the wiring any ideas? i ahve a brand new transit van alternator sitting and it ahs a fair bit of resistance no play adn you can hear the brushes.
Really pickling my brain this one.

I dont mean the battery light was on allt he time is used to seem to work or the charging system dis u know befor starting up the oila nd abttery lights on start her upa nd they both goout like they should now only oil light prior to start up. Forgot to mention that.

Cold weather always brings out the worst in your battery if its a bit weak. I would say your battery is on the way out. Check charging circuit first though. If you have no charging light its either the alternator brushes or the bulb.

THanks for the fast reply.. the batterys are brand new and very good conditon for the other... battery warnign light used tos eem to work but then nothign for last week or so just seem to eventually kill the batterys, checked the bulb today by putting into oil warnign light holster and worked soc an count out light. battery light ahs been tad random befor it stopped workign does this sounds like goosed alternator brushes?
 
The colder the engine the more energy required to get it to go, but at the same time the batterys capacity drops, its really not what you want, but its the laws of physics.

If a battery can give 100% at 80deg F it will half by the time its gets to 0deg F, at the same time the engine will be twice as hard to start.
 
Next time you park it up for a few days, take off a battery lead.

If the fattery still goes blat it's jiggered.

If it doesn't, there something using leccy that you don't know about.

You can buy a isolator switch from Maplins Vehicle wiring Products or most Motor accessory shops. whic allows you to isolate the battery at the flick of a switch. also makes it harder to steal if you hide the switch.
 
be wary - if yu isolate the battery - things like alarms and imobilizers wont work and yu will need to remember radio codes and key fob programming.

You can get battery switches which have a small by-pass system limited to 1 or 2 amps which is enough to keep alarms etc runing, but wont allow starting or other heavy duty loads.

Thanks for all those replys guys appriciate the advice and will deffiantly try discconecting the battery overnight aswell as buying a bettery isolater switch. dont ahve alarms or imobilisers just 2 dogs:D . I had a fettle with the transit alternator being a lucas aswell and checked the regulator and luckily its the same as the landys so gona swap em over count that out too see if i can get the battery warnign light to come on when the keys are in first position with engine stopped. Both batterys ahve been fully re-charged on a slow charger back to full wack. One is brand new the other newish but end of the day you do get faulty batterys so ill count that out too. Wiring and electrics certanly not my strong point. Ill let you know how i get on.Thanks again

Got the abttery warnign light to work again! stripped the alternator right down cleaned the hell outa the thing, lots of mud n **** in there. Managed to take the regulator to bits and it was full of **** too so it got cleaned up. Then noticed the 3pin plug onto back of alternator was a tad wobbly so calped the connections down slightly to amke sure all 3 pins were contacting the spades correctly , put voltage meter across the lot and found no breaks in the current so banged it all abck together refitted alternaot and evryhtign seems fine again. Lights are much brighter and evrhting works well. batterys fully charged so ill see ifhtey die overnight but i have spare in reserve just incase.
 
Remember, in many alternator setups the warning light is an integral part of the circuit , and if it's not in circuit the thing may not charge.

That exactly what i do I also used to get the flat batery after 4-days. So i just switch it off at the battery cut-off switch and the battery is good for weeks & starts in most cases without heat.

handy in town when you want to shut the whole thing down to stop the little elves steeling it away
 
:) Cheers for all the advice on this one guys not being electricaly minded i done what i do know best which is how to strip things right down clean em and build em back up. manged via a link to find workshop manuels for the defender and it states the bulb is vital to the charging system hence my flat battery so you hit that one right ont he money and was the first thing i counted out. Im gona take more advice from you and connect up an isoltaor switch as i dont have alarms etc and dont really need one but would like to safeguard the landy somewhat. Also i want to connect the second battery for running 12v stuff when oot camping up hills getting ****ed, lights radios that sorta stuff. So what is best here duel chargeing sytem or inline runnign a dynamo alongside the alternator> saw one for sale for 30 brand new and thought o thats no bad anyone got one are they good.

No doubt about it - go the caravan battery charging system route, except you won't have a caravan involved.

Using two alternators or adding a dynamo is completely unnecessary, as your existing one alternator will EASILY keep two batteries well up to full charged.

Most of the time an alternator in a car will be running at 10% to 50% of it's maximum output, and it won't be up nor down to ask it to run at 20% to 60% with a second battery in there.

That's the way to go, and the wiring is dead easy, and the bits are cheap.

oo cheapeness thast sounds good. any cahnce you could draw up a wiring diagram and parts needed to do the job in hand?? would really appriciate the input.



On a sour note "Witham specialists vehicles limited" tried to rip me off today with that skanky trailer not the nice one i bidded and won but a rotten peice of crap so in the process of a long and drawn out battle involving trading standards. Another guy was not happy anaw with the van he bought of them so be warned with this lot.:mad:
