With the handbrake on should both props be locked solid?

Yes unless the centre diff is in neutral.

Ah ha, I might be closer to finding my mysterious transmission clunk,

with the handbrake on, can't turn the rear prop at all, yet there's about an inch of rotational play in the front.

any ideas????

Try front UJs if not. It sounds like front output shaft/gears are goosed..

The UJ's are fine, first thing I checked. Been clonking for a couple of thousand miles now, slowly getting worse so I thought I'd try and sort it now before something goes BANG!!!!!!

Doesn't matter what gear your in, but if you quickly come off the power theres a distinct clonk, and same if you quickly reapply the power. Seems to be gbox area. Should I be worried??

could be the intermediate drive gear - taking power from the gbox output shaft and transmitting it to the tbox - HB is yo expert on what that does.

does ur front prop rotate when the handbrakes on?

yes - about a quarter turn.
think the UJs are OK.
not sure if it's the T/F box, front diff or both!
gonna drop the prop and have a goot twist of the output and input flanges to see if I can narrow it down.

The front pro will rotate with the hand brake on. If either of the gearboxes are in neutral, rotating the front prop shaft will turn through the diff to the engine, or up to the bit that is in neutral.

If you don't believe me, jack up the front of the car with the hand brake on not in gear, get both wheels clear of the floor it won't move anywhere.

Jack up the back wheels together itll roll off.

Some movement in the font prob will be apparent - it is just slack in the gearboxes and diff etc. A lot of slack needs adjusting, and that is where diff/gearbox rebuilds are usually required.

The handbrake only locks the rear prop so yes, in contrast to what they said earlier, the front prop will not be locked and it is not abnormal to have a bit of play in it! It is probably a combination of a bit of play in the front diff, possibly the prop itself and the play in the gearbox. i agree though, 1/4 turn is quite a lot.
