hiya, me again?
has any one else had this befor?
stopped applied hand brake, rolled forward about 6 inches and then no handbrake at all.
went to drive off but sounded funny ( clunk grind sort of noise)
reved the engine a little and it sounded fine.
went to pull off but seemed to not be in gear as it should. started again slowley into gear, no drive but a grinding sound more of something metal spinning trying to lock into position.
back into neutral, reved ok. put it back in gear, grinding and whuring, put it into low lock and it drove with no knocks or clangs at all.
parked her up. back to neutral and then tried to drive it with normal gears.
grinding noise which picks up with the revs?
has any one had anything like this ? any info what i should be lookin at.

hand brake locks rear output of transfer box ,have you checked ujs in rear prop and drive member /half shaft splines behind plastic hub caps

that was quick?.
aint looked at nothing yet, im pretty new to these beasts?
thought ide ask first then slowley work my way through other ppls ideas if you see what i mean....
plus im reading all the post on this forum as we speak.

Rear prop / shaft seems logical to me - handbrake hasn't 'failed' its just not locking rear wheels, and diff is letting drive go to wherever the break in the drive is unless you lock it...path of least resistance? Hope its the cheaper end of the spectrum......A

hiya and thanks for all the replies.
ive just had a quick look underneath, right near the rear prop dust cap there is a 15 to 20mm clean area, will be looking at that again tomorrow now as its dark,
i hope its going to be a nice warm day tomorrow

That sounds like the sliding joint to me

me again ....
yes its the sliding joint??

but is 15mm to 20mm right,
it was the first clean thing i saw. will be checking the half shafts in the morning,
i will even take my camera this time aswell just to take pics and notes

Why don't yu just start the motor, put it in gear and then crawl underneath (carefully) and see whether the front or rear prop, or neither, is turning. That will narrow it down a bit.

just done what u said .
started her up rear prop was spinning up in 1st gear, and i could see half shaft spline spinning after i took the dust cover off drivers side rear wheel.
also i had about 30mm plus play on the shaft, slid in and out quite easy

you need ftc1724 and ftc1725 plus ftc859 x2 ,is a very common fault with salisbury axles on 300tdi and td5 grease splines well when you fit new parts, you can drive it in diff lock for a while

forgot to come back and say thanks guys......all done and it runs 100 times quieter now...i think they must of been shot when i brought it..
thanks again ian
