Unfortunately I'm not so lucky and its not the flange :(. The part I'm pointing to in this pic has a good bit of play both up, down and it moves in and out a fair bit.

I know that what I'm pointing to is the CV joint but would that indicate that the CV joint is gone or would a broken halfshaft cause play in the joint like this.
I had put the drive flange back on before taking the pic.

have someone stick it out of diff lock, stick it in gear and see if that cv shaft turns.

Put the wheel back on first though, just incase ;)

Let's just say that it does turn? What would that mean? Or if it doesn't turn?

Sorry for being a mong but I've no one to gimme a hand just now and I can't strip it totally to see as its the only vehicle I've got. Only solution is to buy both the CV joint and the halfshaft and replace them both but I can't afford that at the moment. Hence why I'm trying to determine the broken part before I buy anything
 
jack just that wheel up it should turn prop,but if it doesnt it couldalso be the other side too ,but by trying each in turn you should feel which ,cv may be notchy when wheel turned in full lock

Cheers for the offer mate :). Just gonna guy both parts I reckon and replace them, least then ill know ones not gonna go when I put it back together
 
RYou really have to find the problem first it could be a cv or a shaft or the diff gears themselves most likely is the shaft where it enters the diff your problem is it can be either side sometimes you can feel but not always. As you have been driving with debris in the axle housing assuming it was an inner shaft then you have now got chunks of metal running through your diff bearings and cwp which will do it no good but can cause it to fail later on.

If you have to fix it in one go then I would get hold of a spare diff just in case a pair of shafts and a new cv. Don't be buying cheap new shafts sh genuine are way better quality. I had a brig part cheapy shaft and they're pants if you venture off the road. (Been using the old shaft in the late and the inconsistency of the metal is amazing)

If you can't feel anything at least drain the oil and look for debris in it. Then you really gotta strip out both sides and give it a mega clean out of debris if its a cv then you may be lucky and leave the diff alone but only if your lucky and 100% no metal fragment got anywhere to cause further probs.

I removed both swivels complete left the calipers and brake hose bracket attached to the motor then fitted a new shaft (long one in my case) then took diff out washed the axle housing thoroughly and indeed the diff although I never refitted the diff as I swapped it for a different one as mine had been driven in debris for some miles just to be sure.

I don't really have the luxury of being able to afford a new diff and I've no choice but to drive on it so not much I can do there. I'll be getting a proper look at it tonight anyway with both wheels up so I can at least get a bit more of a clue as to what it could be
 
Unless you have a locking diff in the axle that's operational you have no easy way of telling which side has the broken link to wheel this is due to the operation of an open diff. Both sides will spin freely.
 
S h diffs go around 50-100 quid you can clean yours up and if done should be ok for many miles would hate for you to fix it now and have to pull it apart after a thousand miles for knackared bearings or a failed pinion bearing This is assuming its he inner shaft cv you could be in luck
 
Give yourself some time and you gotta strip it if you cannot feel anything pull one side if its a

I'd get a new cv ordered and a pair of half shafts good Second hand genuine ones diff well if its that that's mega unlucky. If poss a good diff on standby just in case but as said that would be very unlucky.

Pull one side if its the cv great clean debris refit new one good to go,
If diff end broken or if its ok pull other side again check cv broken as above fix clean debris good to go,

If shaft broken at diff end remove diff clean debris in diff axle case and remove broken shaft from diff clean and refit parts req
