Hi all,

I've had an intermittent banging or grating coming from under my TD5 90 over the last couple of months. It's got worse over the last couple of days and as I was driving at 35mph yesterday there was a constant grating sound coming from under me when all of a sudden one of, or all the wheels locked and I skidded on the road. Now there's just a constant rumble/grumble.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what it might be? I'm going to stop driving it for now.

Wheel bearing breaking up?

They can expand as they get hot, lock the wheel and then release as they cool down.

Would jack each wheel and rotate listening/feeling for roughness

wheel bearing, prob need a new stub axle aswell.

Banging and grating for a couple of months ...... at the risk of sounding harsh... next time check it a lot earlier..... imagine a wheel locking and swerving you into a bus stop full of kids, or a wheel locks and the 38 tonner behind slams in killing your passengers cos he was a little too close......or being swerved into the family driving the other way.... doesnt bear thinking about just because you had been planning on investigating the noise but hadn't...... you were lucky this time

or nearly ending up in a canal!! i thought it was UJ so was on way to mates unit to fix it, only happened a few yard away luckily. sh1t myself royally tho...
