I recently acquired an M registered 300 tdi. It was in good mechanical condition bar a cam belt, good service and rear discs and pads.
However it failed its mot mainly on rust. (Everywhere)
I paid £350 for it, dragged it back to the workshop. The rear floor was replaced a year ago, but wasn't painted or sealed, and the water leaks were not fixed so this needed replacing again.
I patched up the inner front wings using 2mm plate, the bulkhead/floor pan join, inner seals and a pillars.
I repaired the rear crossmember with plate and box section, and new body mounts then used 1 inch box, cut into half inch channel to make new runners for the boot floor. Seam welded the new boot floor into place with some patches into the arches.
Sailed through its mot on Tuesday.
Total cost, including buying the car, servicing, and mot was £550 and three weeks of my evening time.
Taxed it today to start tomorrow, and with the money I saved I treated it to a new set of BF G a/t's
It's nice to have a bit of luck sometimes. Rarely comes my way.
