Stressssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

Hi all

I have wired my glow plugs up asdescribed above. BUT WHY does my glow plug light not work (yes it is wired up as described above).

The relay is clicking in and out and i have power to the glow plugs.

can any one answer why does the relay need a feel of the red and yellow wire of the ignition, when it is only live when the engine is turning over? yes the bulb works but no power to the bulb when the relay clicks in to feed the glow plug.

Tried it.

even took a second feed of the relay yellow and black.

getting mighty P**ed off

Perhaps the bulb fitting in the dash is faulty, or its earth isn't working/there. What engine did you have in it?

200tdi and the bulb and earth are perfect multimeter is spot on but the Fin thing wont come one changing the relay tomorrow or set fire to the thing

so it was a 200 and you then put another 200 in?

Bear in mind that a poor earth wont always show up with a multimeter, cos they use very low current.

You say the plugs work OK? How have you tested this, cos those engines (at least my 300) will start fine with no plugs at all, turns over twice and fires.

got the light working.......

I managed to get it working by putting a live feed to the other side of the bulb holder so the feed of the relay is a negative? any one know what i have deon wrong???

Right guys sorry for digging a old thread up but it saves a new one if I can get the answers I want... according to this relay what size wire would you recommend for each plug?

I’m starting from scratch as the old v8 I have had a engine conversion in 2011 and it appears they have completely not bothered wiring in the glow plugs

Thanks

Right the plugs are usually about 90W - at 12V that is 7.5A - however on a cold morning with low battery voltage that could be 9A - so allow 10 per piece and you have then engineered in your safety factor.

So I would suggest a cable suitable for 40A total MINIMUM, so 4.0mm^2 or go up a size to 5.0 mm^2 cable which would be good for about 45A - you could go even further and use 6.0 for 50A.

Always fuse circuits properly and you will never have any issues - if I was building this circuit I think I would go for 50A design load.

Interestingly Land Rover used to use a 60A fuse in the 300tdi fuseboxes for these...

Also, if you have not had glow plugs since 2011 then what is the rush now? Assuming it starts OK without!
