Hello.
Each time iv'e started my Freelander in one week of ownership there has been no sign of a glow plug light on the dash. The drivers handbook refers to the light coming on even when the engine is hot, although only for a moment.
Does this mean that the glow plugs are not working as no light comes on? Athe other lights seem to be operating as they should.

Any advice welcome pals.

I was puzzled by this when I first drove a FL - being accustomed to Mercedes diesels which refuse to start if you are too quick to turn the key.

I never see the glow plug light on my TD4 from about Easter till mid-November.

The M47R engine just doesn't seem to need any pre-heating.

Remember this engine was designed for use in a whole range of climates - some of them much colder than ours.

Wait for a MUCH colder morning and then you'll see it.

Even at -25C mine only comes on for 10 - 15 secs or so.

I have the same symptoms. Only owned the vehicle for a week, no sign on the display. Just been through the whole system with a meter and everything checks out (found the very handy Electrical Library PDF on the InterWeb), so I guessing that it's just too warm (about 10C up here in Orkney).:cool:
 
Light won';t come on until it is colder. To confuse more, the light does NOT indicate the time that the glows are on. Sometimes they stay on longer and sometimes they turn on only AFTER the engine has started with no light. The light is an attempt at telling you when to fire the engine for best combustion. If you monitor the volts on the glows you see a very different story !!
 
The glow plug light will illuminate if the engine is below 15°C at ignition on. Above 15°C, the EDC still modulates the plugs on and off for some time, without showing the light. This is to give clean combustion, as said above.
 
The engine control module also takes into account the battery voltage for if, and how long, pre-heat is used.
Turn the heater/fan off before starting on cold mornings as the PTC heater can draw 75 amps during pre-heat.
 
just to add to the confusion, my 2003 td4 never shows a glow plug light (owned for 3 months) but does have voltage to the glow plugs when starting. My 2001 td4 always shows the glow plug light on the dash! i wonder if the 03 dash "bulb" is faulty but it starts ok so not worried.
 
Interesting. I'm going to have the instrument panel out tomorrow to check the lamp. Replaced both front brake discs and pads, fitted a new front towing eye (missing when bought) and a full filter kit and oil change earlier, so that's enough for one day (that's what the wife has told me anyway).
