Hi Keith

Thank you I did all that stuff and it all seems fine now, took it around the inclines and no problems, I can stop the fan with newspaper tho.

This part is only about 18months old and from memory was quite expensive, can't remember if it was Britpart or not.

Wammers thanks, that all seems ok, I did renew the O ring on that bypass pipe during the renovation.

As I mentioned it's been fine, I guess I'll have to replace that VC, I did take the high incline route straight away last night maybe that was the problem......?

If you can stop the viscous with the engine hot it has a problem.

So had a perfect journey home with not a trace of getting warm including long inclines on the A38, no idea what caused the problem, I loosened the expansion tank cap to top up on a steep incline (rad lowest) when the engine was warm, I wonder if this caused an air lock?

Thanks very much for all the advice everyone

No, but opening the cap with the engine hot releases the pressure stopping the coolant from boiling, if it was low and hot air was present in the system because of that it would expand when you undid the cap and throw the coolant out.

You still need to sort that viscous before the weather gets hot, this time of year the car will run with no fan as long as it's moving at 15/20mph.
