Hi all,
following on from my questions about what motor to look for, i have decided on a Discovery, this one...

Its a 1997 300Tdi, 160k on it. I had a lengthy chat with the dealer and he went into all its faults, which didnt take long:) He said it had had new inner wings, rear door sill and was regularly serviced as it was bought new from him, 2 owners, it did however have a small bit of rust on one rear door frame corner at the sill which could do with plating but its not near the seatbelt anchor so mainly cosmetic and the lower corners of two doors were beginning to flake a bit. The seats have had covers on for 90% of life so they were reported as immaculate.

Ok, so i went and had a look and believe it or not, he was right on all points - a decent honest geezer . I agreed a deposit, delivery and payment method and will hopefully get her Friday, cost was £1900 - is this good or bad?, it seemed to be in line with most others of this age.

I'm more used to Series landies but with the value of what i'm towing in mind i thought something a little more up to date was in order. Its not going to be the main car so will get very low usage, I needed a tow car for steam engine rallies. The insurance was great (£110), it has a full MOT and two months tax, I think it'll do fine for what i want what do you reckon??

Could also be useful if we get another winter like last year which was murder in my Mondeo:rolleyes:

What model is this - 1, 2, 3 ???

Anything to keep an eye on??

This is a great site BTW.

Tis a disco 1, looks nice and if the work has been done / services etc it should be a good car. Price wise you are opening yourself up here as there are loads who claim they paid next to nothing for their discos (allegedly ;) ) but again seems fair to me and as long as your happy with it thats the main thing.

Nice looking mota good luck with it and hope you have fun :) Just keep an eye on fluids and rust.

I don't know much about Disco prices, but, i'd personally be quite happy at that price with the full MOT - congrats :)

Thats what i thought, its quite a high mileage but seems well cared for, which always counts in books. If it lasts a couple of seasons without a glitch i will be very happy indeed.

Having built the engine i am towing around, i have my own full workshop with MIG welding, milling, lathes etc all at hand, thats why i wasnt bothered about the little rust thats visible.

So its a D1, thats a start then.:p Always wanted an early model Range Rover but they seem to be favourite food for the rustworm so will likely never happen, the Disco does at least look a bit like a R/R at the front;)

And uses the same base (chassis/running gear) I think ;)

congrats

If its as good as he says it is, that's a reasonable price. I bought mine for £375 but its needed a fair amount of work, I kept track of the money spent on it and its not actually too far off your purchase cost.

Seem's an ok price if the gear/transfer box's are sound. I'm presuming you'll be towing your steam engine onto fields, perhaps you should consider getting a set of AT tyres for it ...

Yeah, i'll think about the tyres when they come up for changing. Even on slicks, a 4x4 will outpull a Mondeo in the dirt :p

I have a 200TDI 93 K reg and paid £1200 with full mot and 10 months tax
so going on the fact that its newer (and looks nicer) I think the price is good
I have seen 200's with little or no mot going for £2000+ he last few weeks

Yep the prices do seem up. I looked at dozens on the 'net and the prices were all over the place, i viewed three that were not too far away and this was the only one that matched closely what the guy described it as.

I like honesty and acuracy and for that he got the sale, well that and the fact the motor looked a good 'un.

Cant wait to get my hands on her.
