yep, reverse below fifth. Am I right in thinking 2.7L? whats best to go for as the manual states ATF but the listing states MTF?

cheers I'll have a look after work, from what I gather its quite the debate, LR initially recomended ATF for the manual box as apparently the box was struggling with the MTF however after a few years LR decided to change their mind and started to recomend MTF 94!?!? And theres also a product called Difflock Evolution 1 which apparently is formulated for LR gearboxes. Some people have said that they changed the ATF to MTF and had great results others had terrible results and vice versa.

The gist I have is MTF is thicker and ATF is thinner so on one hand I think that the MTF is better for wear but on the other hand is MTF worse for the pump?

I think James has hit the nail on the head with "it doesnt matter as regular oil changes are the key" as to remove any contaminants that would otherwise wear the box out quicker.

Im prob gonna go for the MTF (or maybe the Difflock Evo if I can afford it) but i would like to drain a little and see whats in there at the mo,worst case if I do a change and somethings not right I will just do another change with one of the other oils.

just changed my gearbox oil, went from atf to mtf 94. is it better with mtf in! no dont think it is, it feels a little notchy which wasnt there on atf but its deffo quieter
box has only 89k on it and its in good nick

thats beause you changed the oil and cleaned syncho assemblies

its just a fact if you dont change oil the crap in the oil will wear box out more rapidly ,synchros act like brakes fresh oil clears from gear cone more easily so can feel more notchy ,from experience in rebuilding both r380s and lt77s its changing oil regulary that makes the difference in long life not necessarily choice, you dont find issues of poor lube in atf run boxes as long as its serviced regulary similar with r380 ,both boxes are basically mechanically the same so either will run on the same oil ,apart from pump ,viscosity matters because the thinner the oil the quicker it can transmit heat away , once a box is worn maybe additives can help prolong use ,but it regular changes from the start that really count

Ok thanks for your answer, do you think that as the box has been run on atf from new I should continue to use atf and keep on top of oil changes or will swapping to mtf not have any negative effects as long as I keep up with the maintenance?
in my mind I just felt that cos its a bit more notchy its not being lubed properly and as its quieter that must be cos the oil is thicker and that will put extra load on the pump wont it?

leave as is i often change to mtf as it can help gear change in some ,and change regulary once a year unless quite high mileage ,pump will cope even with thicker oil such as ep90 ,but synchros wont , notchyness ,its not lube of gears or bearings ,but how synchros grip gear cone they have to strip oil off gear cone to brake gear ,it should settle down unless synchros were already worn to a degree that just been high lighted by oil change ,in which case theres not a lot you could have done as oil does need changing

nice answers on this one, cheers jim!
just for my input, i changed from atf to millers oils equivelent of mtf94. went through the lumpiness in the box (cheers for explanations jim), didnt like it for first couple of weeks, then it gradually got nicer. no problems with it now.

yep you, Im still waiting for the day my disco is running but a little rough so I could say to you "theres life jim but not as we know it!"...... Aaaaaah its the simple things....... sorry I got very drunk last night and still not right.

But on a serious note it is great when people actually give you the answer and explain why aswel rather than just the answer, we are not all mechanics. Every days a school day at LandyZone!
