When the D1 was built it was ATF (dexron 2 or 3) in 'some' manual boxes and still is, but with advancements in oils, now the recommendation by Land Rover is to use MTF a silicone based oil.
As Dewin says search as there's load of info on this subject so u can make up your own mind for next time![]()
hi just been to collect my gearbox oil for my 300 tdi from my supplier and hes given me auto transmition fluid for the main box and ep 80/90 for trans box is this ok befor i put it in thanks roger
Mines a 1996 d1 with R380 box-could not get MTF locally so used Castrol SMX-S synthetic MTF from Halfords 75w 80, pricey 12.99 /lt. But boy has it done good ,gear changing so much easier, and the gearbox is getting quieter all the time
I think they recommend the thinner atf oil for the older R380 because the newer R380's have a cross drilled mainshaft input gear which allows proper lubrication of the gear. The older ones don't have this so need the thinner oil to penetrate and lubricate.
As far as I'm aware spec for R380's was upgraded from ATF to MTF, because ATF wasn't providing enough lubrication, same for Disco's as my P38 of a similar age. Don't think it should be a problem, indeed it should be an improvement.I think they recommend the thinner atf oil for the older R380 because the newer R380's have a cross drilled mainshaft input gear which allows proper lubrication of the gear. O dear so biolandy may or maynot have future troubles as his 1996 gearbox is an "older one" if as u say its only gearboxes manufactured from 1998 that MTF useage is recomended.
I'm glad I don't have such a problem it's all so easy with an auto, just use Dexron 3 which as u know is the up todate version of Dexron 2.![]()
MTF 94 is the oil to be used in all R380 applications. ATF was reccomended as it was the only option initially. The problem with it is that it doesn't the friction modifiers required to operate the synchros correctly, whereas MTF 94 does. That is the main reason why you get notchy gear changes on R380.
That'll teach me to follow the Haynes manual then. £25 of ATF down the pan as soom as i can get the cash for MTF ![]()
Keep it for injector cleaner as long as it is mineral based and not synthetic ATF
