Just been reading the workshop manual, official land rover one.

It says to remove the Ird when when your removing the gearbox to do the clutch

PG1 gearbox

Is that necessary???

I have heard it is possible to leave it in but u need to undo it as it is bolted to the gearbox

anythings possible but refitting box would be difficult not easy with ird off

I remember replacing my ird earlier this year the only reason it was hard because it was -2 at its hottest that day lol

But will be back out when my clutch goes for the sake of a couple of extra hours might aswell have the room to work

The IRD mounts to a bracket. I'm not sure if that bracket mounts to the engine or gearbox (or might even be part of the gearbox). If it mounts to the gearbox, it may be that when the gearbox is removed nothing is holding up that end of the IRD. You'd therefore be relying on brackets at the other end to hold up the 30kg weight of the IRD, its oil and the front 1/2 of the propshaft.

It could also be due to the 2 splines from the IRD poking a good few inches out from the IRD and fouling removal of the gearbox.

As matt says, its suprisingly easy to remove the IRD if you have good access to it - from my inspection pit access tot he 20 bolts securing it was quite easy. You do though also have to disconnect the propshaft and the drivers side wheel hub so that the drive shaft can be disconnected from the IRD.

If you do remove it, I'd recommend you disconnect it and leave it sitting on the front subframe rather than lowering all the way to the floor - it is trickey lowering and raising it as its a tightish fit through the gap and cumbersome to move. Make sure its not going to fall off though!

Thinking on - to remove the IRD, you also have to remove the 2 cooling hoses which some clever people have managed to put bungs in - but me, I got wet and needed to refill quite a bit of coolant!

All in all, if the IRD can stay in place (maybe by supporting it) it will be a quicker job - but I don't know if the gearbox can actually come out (due to splines - eg space and allignment when reinstalling) with it there.
