Guys

Just managed to get my baby back on the road after 6 weeks of DIY repairs. I noticed when I was running in the new camshaft that I had a "Gearbox Fault" message on the dash. I initally put it down to the battery not being fully charged however when I took her out this afternoon for her debut run the gear changes were really lumpy. Previously you could barely detect a gear change other than by listening to the revs.

Anybody got any ideas?
 
Blimey you are having fun JT!. Have you checked your battery voltage? It might have gone into fail safe mode. If it's been standing for a while it might be a bit low (fingers crossed).
 
It's got to be something like that cause she was beautiful before I started to strip down the heads. Spent an hour on RAVE this evening trying to see if there is a connector or something that I might have disturbed. Nothing too obvious but worth a closer inspection in the morning.
 
Mine was like that, one day it was working fine, parked, turned it off, next day it wasn't working properly. Tried everything, no luck so must be the box.
 
That's the message I get when my 2000 diesel auto cuts out when I take my foot off going down hill. It's only very intermittent so I haven't got round to sorting it but I'm convinced it's a sensor fault and the gearbox is getting the wrong engine speed data. Have you got a crank sensor? Have you disturbed it whilst doing the other work?
 
OK, so after a good examination under the car I found a multiplug that I had missed during the rebuild. One end goes to the gearbox so I guess that is the most likely cause of my fault.
Only problem is that the fault message did not clear. I moved the box through all the gears and still not clearing. Will this clear if I take her out for a run or do I need the someone with a computer to reset the fault?
 
Fault now gone from display. It cleared itself after a small run up and down my drive. Booked in for a test tomorrow morning so fingers crossed all this work has been worth it.

Where exactly was the multiplug please? Clutching at straws before I hike the box out:mad:

Hi Data, the cable ran from the middle of the gearbox and joined another cable right at the back of the engine block. That cable ran down the same same loom that has the fuel injector wiring.
It took me a while to get it connected but would have been much easier if I had done it before putting the LH head back on.
 
I only asked as my problem coincided with mice eating the leakoff pipes, I hoped there might be some wires they fancied too. Mines a diesel so I expect the loom is different but I will have a look. Thanks.

That sounds like the one that I had a problem with - I had an oil leak from the back of the rocker cover onto the connector that caused my gearbox to start randomly kicking down - as with yours, my gearbox couldn't tell what the engine was doing.
