The continuing saga of my poor old car. Got it back on the road and was driving it when it seemed to be trying to cut out but not quite.. anyway got my mechanic in and he reckoned it was fuel filter. He has replaced all the filters etc oil changed and level check. He also ran diags before and after - nothing.
Took it for its first test drive, got three miles down the A47 and it started doing its hesitation thing again. Then it died. Coasted to the side of road, two flashing error lights - manual sez its an electrical gearbox fault. Called my mechanic, who doesn't know why it didn't show on the diags. Got towed home by the AA and my mechanic will be out in a day or so but can anyone get him pointed in the right direction?
Does it sound like a sensor? He tells me fluid levels are fine in box...:confused::confused::confused:

Help! Someone already wrote my poor car off and he's just been put back on the road and now another problem!
 
Hello Pam, by the two lights do you mean the "M&S" lights. I also am new to Td5's but I had this problem recently. Engine would run OK and drove home fine. Check the negative battery terminal. Maybe ok to start engine etc but will not stop the M*S lights.
I couldn't get the terminal any tighter by the nut and it was still moving slightly.#
Made it really tight by hammering small nail down between battery post and terminal end.
Have'nt had a problem since. Maybe not your problem but anything is worth a try.

Yep they are manual and sport lights. The car will turn itself off once they come on, there's nothing you can do to stop it. I turned it off and on again, it reset long enough to drive onto the kerb and roll slowly into a handy petrol station. The car just cuts out while you are traveling, not good. :(
 
The auto box is the 1st thing to have a funny turn if the batt is playing up . 1st thing I would do is try it with a new batt. Then check both plugs into ecu next to batt for oil it gets In from the engine loom . Next check oil level in the auto box .also take a look at the fuse box under dash (driver side ) for water Damage . And as said above check all earths .
 
Well the mechanic has just been. He sez the battery is the wrong type as it isn't big enough. He tightened the connectors anyway and took it for a drive to try and get it to break. It did and he got two faults up one was driver demand fault which apparently is the throttle? Googling didn't help as most people replaced the throttle bits and it didn't fix. Mechanic sez don't replace battery for now and has gone off to ask around about the fault codes..
 
Mechanic doesn't want me to spend lots on it if it is going to be expensive to fix. A battery from Land Rover in Kings Lynn is £190. I bought the car back off the insurance company for £300, spent £100 on a new bonnet and lights, £150 on the service the mechanic just gave it. I can't keep throwing money at it - if it needs a £30 sensor, fine but if it needs hundreds more spent, I'll have to scrap it. I can't afford to spend all this money on a cat C write off that will never be worth much if I have to sell it.
 
your TD5 whether or not a cat c will be still worth a bit,long as rear chassis is ok, headgasket ok, go on ebay, Eurocarparts etc, batteries for under £100 delivered, has the battery gone flat with standing? you sound as though you have £550 in it before a battery! what other 4x4 can you get for that, A td5 for that i would say cheap! with the forecast of snow, who knows! battery first i would say, can you not try a battery off summat else?
 
I spent time looking at batteries and it looks like many of the offerings from places like halfords don't seem to be the right sort power wise. Thats why I rang land rover in the end 'cos the battery I have is fine but not the right one either. I would like to keep the car but I'm running two cars now so money is always tight. I had a chap off this forum come look it over and he seemed impressed by the total lack of rust. It also had a new engine from land rover about 50k ago and lots of receipts for work done. It was a super truck till a lorry reversed into it...
 
Have you tried starting it with jump leads hooked up to another car then leave it on tick over don't touch the throttle . Then move the gears up and down still on tick over and see how long it runs for without fault . Then if no fault show start holding car at different revs . To see if it is the throttle sensor all the time keeping it on the jump leads . Then if still nothing take leads of and repeat to see if the batt starts to drop out . Does it always conk out about the same time /mileage .
