Now the goalposts have moved!
I took the cover off and all looked well, nothing out of place, no grooves on the lower stick just some grease and there is a small machined hole on the driver's side of it but no loose parts apparent below in the "well" so to speak.
So I had a fiddle and it felt like it had fixed itself except it wouldn't go into 5th so I took it for a test drive and 1,2,3,4 and reverse work fine but I can't quite get 5th. The lever comes over and moves forward and you can feel a rumble on the stick from the cogs but it won't go forward enough to select the gear. Otherwise drives lovely,
Surprising the noise coming through the open transmission tunnel.
So where now?

you need to undo hi/lo housing first then 3 bolts left holding top ,rear most gear the one straight below top is 5th ,in front is baulk ring then synchro hub ,synchro hub goes rearwards for 5th and forward for reverse ,to engage 5th hub slides oever baulk ring and over dog teeth on 5th

Ok I'll have a look when I can and put the outcome on here

I'm back and I've managed to get the bias plate off, that'll be fun getting the springs back in place!!
I've raken out the gear lever, nothing apparently wrong there or in the well.
I've then taken the bolts off the hi/lo remote and it floats a few mm above the main plate.
I've undone the 3 bolts on the main plate but it won't budge.
Are there other bolts I've missed?
Do I need to disenage the hi/lo remote linkage (please say no!)
Is the lid sealed down/gasket/just stuck?

I can see this becoming my winter hobby at this rate!!
I also suspect that once I see what's wrong the box will have to come out to fix it, :((

Thanks again!

top is held by 4 bolts 1 which also holds hi/lo housing ,it may be stuck well with silicone ,when you come back to bias plate holes are slotted to enable you to set lever in 3rd 4th

Just a thought. Does the ball with a hole in it and the plastic collar it sits in at the bottom of the gear lever well stay in place when I remove the cover plate or do I have to remove it and if so how?
Thanks

Right managed to get top off without breaking it! minor victory for me!!

I can't see anything broken. I can move the lever into the main gears and reverse but when I try to get 5th it moves over to the passenger side but wont go backwards towards the rear of the vehicle (Mirror image of lever movement when in one piece) if that makes sense.

Cant' see anything obviously broken, no metal bits/filings, Looks lovely and clean in fact including the box oil I can see.

What do I start to poke at to try to find out what's amiss?

It's sunny and I'm in my scruffs so I can pop in and out to try things. PMA!!
