Hi lads I have trouble selecting gear when I first start in the morning. I need to revers of the drive but it will not engage gear until I have forced it in to first gear and drove forwards. Then I can select revers. No problems all day after that. But next morning same problem. Its a Discovery mk2 tdi 2001. Any help much appreciated.

+1 with @brian47, does sound like a good place to start.
while you are at it change the transfer box oil as well. You may want to get a pressure filler to get the new oil into the GBox and Tranny. ( I use a garden sprayer ). Make sure to get the correct oils for each one. Oh, and make sure you can get to the filler and undo it before undoing the drain.
In the short term until you have replaced the gearbox oil, Can you not park in and leave it in reverse, then in the morning you are ready to go.

My garage and I have come to an agreement, if I don't ask for something to be done, they won't do it, well, not without asking me first.
I ask for a "service" every year when the car goes in for MoT, for that, I supply the filters and they change the engine oil. Every other year, I'l ask for a "full service", then things are the same as an ordinary service but they also change the other oils, gearbox, t-box and axles. They'll also grease the prop shafts too. But at fewer than 5000 miles a year, I'm not what you could call a high mileage user.
But, and here's the thing, you have to ask.
