A pal of mine came to remove the main gear box drain plug on my 1995 300 Tdi this morning and was unable to shift it. Thats with a spanner and a 4' extension bar. He didn't want to push it any further for fear of doing some damage. Can anyone give me a clue as to the best way of getting it to shift. And is the drain plug supposed to be 20-22mm in size?

Also where would I pick up the spanner needed to undo the transfer gearbox drainplug without having to pay an arm and a leg for it. I understand its very close to the handbrake drum.

Look forward to your input folks.

Not sure if its the same one on a TD5, certainly the size is similar. I couldn't get enough room to get a socket onto it so used a long spanner and shocked it with a belt from a hammer. Very tight though.

Just changed the oils on me 200tdi this mornin', but don't know if it's the same either. Main gearbox drain plug, i used a 24mm socket and a little bit of grunt. Filler plug, I used the thing you put the sockets on, 1/2" drive. Transfer box, I think it was a 17mm socket for drain and a 13mm spanner for filler. Btw you might be wantin' one of them things that can suck oil from the container and skoosh it back into the gearboxes as it's a nightmare otherwise.

socket and a little bit of grunt.
Which little bit did you use cos I never felt a thing!

Squirt a bit of WD40 on it then heat the casing up with a blow lamp when the oil starts to bubble have a go at undoing it, you could try nipping it up a very small ammount then unscrewing it.

DISCLAIMER.
If you blow the universe up when doing the blowlamp bit it int my fault, If you ant any common sense don't do it!

one of them things is called a syringe.. and make sure you get a good un cos if you dint you might get one with the sucky up seal ok but wiff a knackered pushy out seal. which means that you can fill the thing up but when you go to empty the syringe into the g/box the oil by-passes the seal.. then when you think it empty and you go to suck up some more all the oil that by-passed the seal comes hurtlin oot the breather hole covering everything that is in line wiff it. which due to murphy's law will be yer good self.

Ta for the replies lads. Also while I'm on, if the drain plug on the gear box is on the front side of the box at the bottom, then what is that hole more or less directly behind it on the underside. Mine appears to have a thread in it....should it have a plug and if so what is it for. At present it is just open.

it fer wadding... you put a plug in it when waddin so as to prevent water and **** getting on to yer clutch.. when the plug is out it prevents any leaked oil from getting on to yer clutch...
so to recap.........in water plug out=water and **** on clutch
not in water, plug in=leaked oil on clutch.

if you dint drive through water leave it out. if yer based near twekesbury put a plug in
