Gas Oil is red diesel - for off road use only. central heating oil is usually Kerasene, which is also dodgy legally to stick in ur tank, and you may be paying 80p a litre (if you haven't shopped around enough), but bear in mind that that is delivered and put in your tank for you.

Yeah but mum is out in the country, 30 miles north of Aberdeen so maybe that's why it's expensive
I used to have an old clapped out Diesel Fraud Escort that I bought for £30, I still to this day don't know how it went through an MOT but it did, Anyway I blocked up the original fuel tank and threw a tenners worth of white diesel in the tank, I got a old small tank off a mate and fitted it in me spare wheel well and filled it up with red from the farm I worked on I could run backwards and forwads to work (12 miles round trip) on about £2 of Diesel a week (this was way back in 200 when diesel was a hell of a lot cheaper
if the plod ever dipped me tank they would get the white stuff
EDIT: I think farmers are allowed to run their 4x4's on red diesel so long as they are travelling to another field they own and not going over a certain distance, same as tractors, why should a farmer put white stuff in it when it spends 90% of its time in a field, so do farmers jeeps

I think there's quite a few landys out there on 2 tanks, one for road diesel and one for red for when off road, with a switch which often gets conveniently forgotten to be thrown back to the white diesel when back on the tarmac! They should give red a smell (like chip fat) so's the plod get a bit of a clue that it's being used, just by following the users!

And not all red Diesel smells and burns smokey,at the umps for 70p a litre will be the premium qulaity stuff. If you look around you can get it for 40p a litre for the ****e stuff which isnt as refined and quite "Waxy" and smokes quite a bit more in any engine, Thats the stuff what smells a little.. I used to use it in my 2a before I MOT'd it as I used it offroad all the time and I used to get given it from a mate's building site where they use big Drots and excavators and that stuff is like 2 Stroke oil!
Another sign is Cheep Gas oil is more "Reddy" than the Premium stuff used on farms and roadgoing tractors.. When you pour the preimium stuff it is yellow, And the Cheep stuff is distingtivly much more Darker red..
Theres a place Near where I used to work which sold it on a fore court at 70p per litre, Being Maltby there was quite a few farms near by so I guess it was for farmers..
Just a little lesson for you there.. But even offroaders shouldnt be run on the cheeper Under refined ****e. And in the winter as it doesnt have the anti waxing agent in it it can solidify in your lines.. Hence why most farmers landrovers struggle to start on winter morning's (Of course they use it!) If you do use it in a landrover offroad Put a splash of petrol in the mix to thin it down a little and will also help clear out your lines..
But simple.. DONT use it on the roads Unless you can afford 3 Points and you dont mind the car your using getting taken away and Probably Crushed if you dont pay the Impound fee..

But still if you know what your looking out for you can normally tell if a Car is running on Red on the road no matter how good the red is..
I also prooved you Can filter the Red Dye out using stuff in your house (I can't say what you use) But if you was Dipped you could still be detected as its got other chemicals in the Diesel which help say its not White diesel..

Yeah the Second tank trick... Wont work now as they rarely use the dipping rod (Tampon on a stick
).. Now they will either Stick a Sniffer up your exhaust eek: ).. Or will syphon a small amound out of your tank and test it using other chemicals, And if it was red even without the dye you would get caught..Tractors are allowed to run on Red Diesel for any distance they want, But you are not allowed to use the tractor for haulage perposes on red diesel (A Local farmer got done for that).. Unless the Landrover is classed as an agriculural vehicle it's NOT allowed to run on Red Diesel on the public roads.. But if you are skipping field to field I think you would get off with it, But a Blinged up 90 with Mach 5's, Bullbar, Winch, Tinted windows and metalic paint work wouldnt get off as a farmers vehicle
..But as Red Diesel is normally 70p a litre, Why risk it when Bio Diesel can be bought for little as 80p per litre in bulk?. Or even cheeper if you make it

It'll run a bit hot, so it's wise to dilute it a bit with something with a lower burning point - touch of unleaded will do apparently.

The filtering method is not great for large quantites, it may be OK in the kitchen to do a pint of the stuff.
Local boy uses acid to remove the dye from red, half a gallon of it will remove the dye from a tank. Thats the easy bit.

Are you talking gas oil, or kerosene both which are used for heating. Gas oil (Red diesel) and diesel is the same product… sort of. Red is a little smokier and has different smells and things because it has more sulphur in it; the dye gives it a slightly sweet smell. White and red used to have the same properties only red had dye in it. Then with emissions and it being used on the road more and advances in technology they made it a bit “cleaner”. This is how they can tell its red diesel even with dyes removed because of its sulphur content and how it’s refined. In fact they can tell a hell of a lot about a fuel, right down to which hole in the ground it came from, and who made it.
SO, unleaded won't do if you are referring to kero (and if your referring to gas oil well it doesn’t need anything done to it) unleaded will make the viscosity even lower (heating oil is too viscous as it is and offers NO lubrication) and its ignition point is only about 30deg higher than diesel. You want to use something heavier like engine oil or veg oil. The general rule of thumb is the heavier the oil the more calories it as his it per unit, BUT the lower the cetane rating (ignition fetor).
If you take some heating oil, which has a higher cetane rating than diesel and has a low viscosity and some engine oil which has a lower cetane rating and higher viscosity and lots of energy you can effectively develop an energy rich, easily ignited fuel – or in this case get it closer to diesel.

Yeah I know there some better tricks for large quantities. But I only did it on a gallon and compared it to the Control being standard 1.33 a litre diesel and you couldnt tell, Yet if you used chemicals you could tell it was gas oil.. I only did it to proove someone wrong and used 3 methods although I know a brita filter "might" soak colour out using the charcoal filter
I tried burnt toast, Sawdust and Cat litter (Natural fullers earth) And Ill confrim the one designed for your cat works if you filter the Diesel 25-30 times, Problem is you loose a bit of diesel doing it as it just soaks in the Cat litter..Like I said I only carried it out to proove someone wrong, I have red diesel to hand for starting fires (I have a lot of trees to burn on my yard) and degreasing stuff
