Not long had my 90 and was wondering how much people are paying to fill their tanks? Mine's a 1989 19J so if anyone with a similar sized tank (are the tdi's the same?) could let me know what it costs as of today's prices i'd be grateful.

The reason I'm actually asking is I'm not sure how accurate my gauge is. I get the fuel light coming on when it's showing just over a quarter of a tank so I/m not sure which to trust.

Last time the light was on pretty much constantly I filled it up and it cost £57 and I've done 230 miles and the light has just start to come on again.
 
You should have a 12 gallon (54 litre) tank, and it depends on how you drive it, the type of terrain and how much extra weight you carry!

How much fuel did you get for your £57?

Work out your average mileage and take it from there.

My 110 N/A returns over 30 mpg, but yours might only give low 20's depending on how it is set up.

Works out at 41 litres which suggests the gauge is showing as correct but the light is coming on too soon?
 
90s only have a 45 litre tank, mines cost 67 quid or so at Asda the other day (think fuel was about 139.9). If you fill your tank up full and the gauge still isn't showing properly you can take out the sender and bend the wire to adjust the gauge, its quite simple

doesn't that work out at nearly 48 litres? Doing a quick search on the tinterweb seems to suggest the tank is 54 litres

Nope its definitely 45 as I look at the quantity when I'm filling, not the cost and I don't wait for the pump to click off. Newer 90s have 54 litre tanks, the older ones are definitely 45. I've looked into it, trust me

AFAIK tdi 90's have 45 litre tanks and td5 and newer with the fuel tank at the back have 60 litre tanks..

It's a pitiful amount of fuel really. :(
 
can I fit the back tank in addition to the factory side one?

I thought mine was bad on fuel as I'm always filling up, but my audi has an 80 liter tank, so i'm at the petrol station twice as often in my 90

You can, there's an excellent build thread on here about someone fitting a td5 one. But, its a lot of work and cost that isn't much use unless you're going to be overlanding or something. I used to carry a 20 litre jerry can in the back and just use that to give me a total of 65 litres on board but realistically we're never far away from a fuel station so has never been a problem. I like the idea of an additional tank as the 45 litres is pitiful but its not that much of a pain yet

There are loads of options available, you can fit the td5 one at the back or one on the opposite side to the standard or in either of the rear wheel arches.. It's expensive though and you don't need it in this country it's just convenience really.

I hate going to the petrol station so much I might fit a left and rear one

Haha well it is handy..

If you are going to do it consider the ones that go in the rear arches, I think front runner do the tanks and pretty sure they are 45 litres but the advantage of these is that they are gravity fed so you don't need to worry about having a pump or manually pumping fuel from one tank to the other it just keeps the main tank topped up :cool:

I have defender 90 station wagon 1990 td and the fuel tank is 45.5 litres, according to the Haynes manual a 90 and a 110 are fitted with a 68.2 litre tank, side mounted, but station wagons have a 45.5 litre tank side mounted, rear mounted tanks such as 110 hold 79.5 litres.
 
I wish I could fit 68 litres in my tank! It's definitely 45, I've filled it up sufficiently and can look in the filler and see the diesel, another 23 litres would be pushing it I reckon. I'm positive older ones had the smaller tanks and they only got slightly larger when the td5 came in and they moved them to the rear
 
My td5 90 hardtop owners manual says 60 litres or just over 13 gallons.
I regularly put 12 gallons in mine . My old 300 tdi only held 12 gallons
