Hi all,
A Few days ago my '02 1.8 petrol freelander just wouldn't start one morning. After pulling the feed to the injectors out, I noticed there was no fuel coming through. This turned out to be the motor for the fuel pump simply not firing up.

I got a replacement from a scrapyard. It looks more or less the same only with a smaller connector for the wires. but the wires remained the same (2 thick, black ones, 1 thick white and purple one, and a thin green one) I stripped the wires off the old one and connected these to the new pump. now this one won't fire up, all I'm getting is occasionally the fuel gauge will go to max.

Is there anything I might be doing wrong? perhaps the wires need to be moved around soldered? Or have I simply got the wrong fuel pump?

The 1.8 used two different pumps and the wiring from memory was different. The two thick wires is the power and earth for the pump, the thin ones are for the fuel gauge. Just check with the old pump where the wires went originally and match it on the new/ other pump, just manually with a battery and wires test the new/ other pump it may be faulty too.
