on my 109 lwb.....was adjusting the rear tub/hard top with a adjusting hammer when i noticed a stronger smell of petrol...previous owner told me tank ok but smell of petrol due to breather not connected.
had car now 2 months and noticed no leaks but gauge not working etc...its dripping from the central hole where the drain plug is but from the rim not plug...if i park it on a hill its then from the ns seam...it stops after awile so i suspect pipe but cannot see any damage or loose fittings or maybe i am not looking in the right places...
if it was tank it would leak till empty or stop when lower than hole etc....checked where sender unit is....bone dry.
noticed on a parts diagram that i have the breathers in the rear section too but not noticed an inspection access plate in rear floor for that but not looked either......any ideas or price for a new tank please.
un did the 2 rear bolts holding the tank in and it dribbled rear wards but stopped when we rebolted the tank....

Paddocks are doing rear tanks for a 109 for £85-00 at the moment.
If you buy one I would suggest getting a new gaskett and lock ring for the sender unit and new rubber fixing bushes.
I have been messing with mine all afternoon. Once the old one is off it seems wrong to put the new one in without wire brushing and painting the chassis parts that you can't get to with the tank in place.
I have struggled because I was fitting it on my own.Two people would make it easy.I also had the problem that the rear holes did not line up. On my old tank they were at 15 inch centres but for some reason the new one had them at 15 and a 1/4. I would suggest checking this before fitting. Good luck!

will do...but i will check if i did not knock a breather pipe off first as it only leaks when started then stops after a while...was told breather was not connected but i found 2 pipes near tank with one of them was a connecting pipe inside it so i will check the rear breathers first

On the top of the tank you have 1 breather pipe,a balancing pipe which goes between the front of the tank and the rear and the feed pipe. You also have the sender unit. I have 2 cutouts in the floor of my landy which makes it easy to see if all is well. If you haven't got these you may have to lower the tank to check.The only other connection is the filler pipe which is easy to check once you remove the mud.

removed the tank in 10 mins as the inner bolts were not even tight so tank as been off before......breather not connected and air transfer was broken but area was dry as a bone so not leaking where i had hoped for.....filled tank with water but no obvious leaks but was really damp underneath which should have been dry over weekend.....used compressed air around the drain plug and petrol and bubbles appeared around the seams.....it seems its been a sponge after all.....the amount of fuel i emptied from what i put in puts my fuel comsumption to around 20 yards to the litre....ordered another from paddocks plus gaskets and ring and thefiller neck tube £120 posted so not too bad.....local landy agents wanted £130 plus vat for tank alone

Just check the back fixing holes prior to fitting. Your tank may well be from the same batch as mine and the holes are 1/4 inch out. Easier to file out when on the workbench than when hanging nearly in place.
