Fuel gauge has a mind of it own,

Notice over the last few days, when driving that the fuel gauge is rising, yet when I filled up today is went to empty and the light came on, I have set the trip-ometer to remind me to fill up after 400miles

Any ideas?

If it is the sensor how easy is this to get to change.

maybe a lost earth connection at the sender ? worth a quick squint before spending any cash
