Hi chaps,

Anyone on hgere done this job themselves?? Need to do it to the hippo before the MOT on thursday - IS it worth doing myself, or shall i just send it to the garage? My local garage (very good) has quoted me £28 for the bearing kit and reckons its no more thatn an hours labour (he currently charges £35 ph)

So should it be £80 (after the VAT) and get it done woth no hassle, or £20 odd quid and gove it a crack myself?

Even if i had all the equipment to do it all in my garage , for £80, doing the wheelbearing yourself barely seems worth it

No, i dont have a press, which is what was putting me off anyway.. £80 it is then.. i suppose any garage bill under £100 is good these days eh?

You have to have a press or it knackers the abs stuff I understand

That was what i was worried about the most to be honest.. especially since thats all linked it to the HDC etc, so that could start nop end of problems..

They mechanice had it on the ramp earlier and insisted that barring disatsers it wont take an hour..

As he was telling me he had an 05 TD4 on the ramps and said hed done the same job on that from start to finish in 45 mins..

So at the moment, even if it sounds a tad lazy, im saying sod it and paying the garage to do it...

They arent a bad job, they just arent a nice job. Sounds like you've found a nice mechanic that doesnt charge the earth.

I'm not sure you would have got it diagnosed at a main dealer for under £114.

I had mine done by a local guy - I was going to do it (rear) but he pointed out the magnetic thing and his press - he didn't nerd the work either so could have let me go. Anyhow it was less than an hour. It only gets difficult if the bolts on some of the bolts are seized.

I could not believe the difference just one bearing made to the noise level in the Freelander - it's so quiet now it's a pleasure to drive.
