Possibly when both the front heater controls are turned to cold the dampers are not closing fully and cutting off the heat from the matrix.

Between rear seat vents, or the full monty overhead vents, with a/c machinery tucked in the rear?
D1 with proper full rear a/c is super super rare in the UK.
Is the front blowing any air at all?
The proper rear a/c has its own blower motor, so it coudl be as simple as the front blower has packed up?

The front is bowing air but it may be less than its usual (which was never great). The air comes out at ambient temp. The heater works.
The rear a/c cools as usual. I think I will have the a/c man look at it. I was told to check the a/c gas first as if it is low it may be enough for the smaller rear condenser but not for the front (if I got it right). Anyway, that's beyond my skill level

I was thinking about something like that, but wouldn't it heat constantly with the a/c off?

Yes it would, there will still be warm air blowing from the heater when on the cold setting, even when the outside nighttime ambient temperature is cool/cold. Which I take isn’t happening.

No, it's not warming when the dials are on the blue. It's just not cooling.

yes, though it seems stuck/ constantly pressed in. In any case I haven't changed its position. The a/c worked ok till now, was never too strong but I was told that that's normal for the model.
Iirc the 200 and 300 has a small vac pipe that runs from the brake servo main pipe into the cabin, which activates one of the flaps, always used to rot and drop off by the servo?
