On my freelander when deaccelerating there is a slight whineing sound
comming from the trasmisson area .manual trans Gear changing etc is
normal Any ideas Thanks

check the usual things furst - VCU, prop shaft joints, VCU support bearings, rear diff supports. etc.

I reckon its your IRD, they whine when de-accelerating.

They all do it to a degree, although if the bearings are starting to age then you get a slight clunking of the cogs when at low speed transmission.

My money is on the IRD but check the other components as MHM suggested.

remove the whole propshaft, from the IRD to rear diff, if its still present its just the IRD whine.

Let us know how you get on.
