Hi, we cant get the nut of that holds the crankshaft pulley on. i made a tool that braces against the pulley teeth (castellated) part and braces against the car. we have tried a breaker bar and air impact wrench. also tried homemade T bar (scaffold tube with thick rebar though it). none shift it.

any ideas. we are stuck (pardon the pun)

It's really tight - I used a 3/4" drive air ratchet gun and just buzzed and buzzed at it and it eventually came undone!

If you can get some heat on the bolt it helps!

i had to get my mobile truck tyrefitter mate to come round and put his 1 inch square drive gun on it to get mine undone.

1inch drive . Damn, when you guys said it was was tight i was thinking yeah 1/2 inch drive breaker bar plus scaffold tube would do lol. its so tight the tool i made to hold all the teath has bent the teath.

hi, thanks for the help. in the end i got the pulley off. but now i have a new problem.
i did the 60 60 30 degree at 100nm. got the belts on and started up, the pulley is all over the place. checked the pulley bolt and its come loose

please any suggestions

When I did mine I just tightened it up with the air gun (not too long mind) and have had no issues since

Maybe try some loctite?

did it have a woodruff key in the shaft as if it did you need to get it into place if it did not have one then do not put one in ,there is a cut in the shaft for it but this does not say it had one .

No woodruff key that i remember. rave doesn't say anything about it. poster on the rover forum (same engine) was concerned about not having a key. from the site "What BMW are saying, is use a parallel key to align the two slots in the crank pulley and crank"
both raves say nothing about this.. odd.

Mine had no woodruff key the new pully just bolted straight on in any position...I could only get it as tight as the resistance of the engine (got an auto) it been OK upto date...they way the engine spins over should tighten it up anyway....

Have you got the right pully?

ok, thanks for all the help. tightened it up with an air gun seems ok.

i will start from the beginning. i have a vibration/waffle in the car in drive and reverse at a standstill. when i pull away it goes. the car is fine in park and neutral. i have changed both lower and upper tie rod and this pulley. still have the problem.

I have all this to come as ours failed last nights on our TD4 2003 Auto.

Do it with the engine warmed up...make the bolt untighten a lot easier..

I have to either charge the battery over night or jump start it now, as it wont turn over.

Worse case can it be towed to a garage approx 2 miles away, it is a TD4 Automatic version, so I am guessing it can't be.

Sorry for the late reply. we fitted a cheap £50 - 60 pulley (ebay) and that didnt go to well. There was now vibration in P and N.
Purchased a corteco pulley and the vibration seems to be a lot less. With relation to above post, vibration also less after a journey.
