Hello everyone

I recently purchaced a k series landrover and i need some advise on the vcu. When i reverse on full lock the car feels like the brakes are on,its quite stiff. Also when driving forward it feels like its holding back. Iv never had a 4x4 before so im not really sure if this is a normal thing but i have read that it may be the vcu.

Definitely not normal. The signs you have described are the warning signs for VCU failure. VCU is the viscous coupling unit that essentially enables 4 wheel drive (drive to the rear wheels) when the wheel speed is significantly different between wheels. In the case of VCU failure it does not often seize solid but does but enormous strain on the other drivetrain components including IRD and gearbox.

Do a search on here for the method to test the VCU (uses a long breaker bar and a 3kg weight I think) to test it and if it is failing DO NOT DRIVE WITH IT! Either get the prop taken off quickly to prevent any/further damage or get it picked up.

Oh cool will give that a try. If it is the vcu were could i get one for the right money cous from what i can see there quite pricey. And is it something i could do myself or is it best to take it to a garage ?.

Expensive to buy but its a fairly easy part to swap over, suggest changing the prob mounts aswell whilst its off.

bell engineering refurb them, 250 for vcu and bearings supplied with yours being sent back, and an easy job to do

Thought they were a sealed unit didnt know you could have them refurbed. How much would a new one set me back.

not just any tom dick and harry can do it theyve done oads of research into how much fluid to re use and other shizzle..

new one wouldnt like to think how much, not sure even if you can still get them

Do the wheel up test.
Do not drive it as it is, otherwise it can get VERY expensive.
Bell come highly recommended.

I was thinking of doing this test as iv been reading your debate on vcu testing but at the end of it im really no closer to understanding what to do. I dont have a touqe rench, is there a way i an do it without one ?. I will be getting one in couple of weeks but want to do the test asap really as i dont want to drive it if its going to cause mord damage. I v got minimal mechanic skills iv changed the brake disks and pads and done oil and coolent change on my freelander but never took a drive shaft off.

Any help would be appreciated.
