Hello,

I have a 2003 1.8 petrol freelander and its grinding going into reverse and when its hot it struggles to go into first gear. The biting point seems around the centre of the clutch swing.. Is the slave cylinder located below the airbox thats next to the battery? if so could this be the issue as If I grab it i can twist it sideways (both ways about 10mm of movement) or is it more likely to be the clutch?

unless wrong oil in gear box (too thick ) you should be able with clutch fully depressed go through all gears with no hinderance ,either clutch system not pushing enough ie needs bleeding etc or clutch cover worn dragging clutch plate, the grating is because reverse gear is slid into mesh

Thanks for your reply. The grating is only in reverse and it happens everytime I try select reverse. It does seem as though the clutch isn't fully disengaging when the pedal is fully depressed. How would I go about bleading the system?

hi my wife had same problem i ordered a new master cylinder and the front plate the other cylinder sits on as it was cracked and bending when clutch depressed fixed it but on the freelander 1 it is always wise to stop the car then put it into reverse do not do it while rolling as m,y wife keeps trying to do then woonders why it growns at her

Hi, Thanks for your reply.. Yeah I always stop it before selecting reverse.. I have just been messing about with it, checked the fluid in the master cylinder and its full, looks to have a bit of crap in the bottom though.. When I press the clutch fully down, and try select reverse, it does the same as it would if I selected reverse without pressing the clutch at all. you really have to pull it hard to get it in gear.. the biting point is actually quite low... need to have it right asap cos the car is on ebay for sale... would replacing the cylinders fix the issue? or just maybe the bracket? I need to get someone to help me press the clutch while i look for movement i think..

not the clutch mounting bracket broken is it, thats a common problem.

Right, I have taken the slave cylinder off and removed the bracket, the bracket 'seems' to be ok, No brakes or bends or anything that I can see.. The slave also looks ok... Apart from some white gungy stuff inside if I remove the rubber sleeve... Any ideas?? I hope its not the clutch...

had the same with mine changed the slave cylinder as they cant be blead helped a bit but ended up having a new clutch also drained the gear box oil and re newed it the problem with mine was the clutch arm that went into the gear box had seazed hope yours is just the slave cylinder also try just re newing the oil

Thanks for your reply... Decided to go buy a new slave cylinder and bracket lastnight from simmonites in bradford.. Genuine landrover parts.. £106 in total.. Fitted it and its better but not perfect.. Wacked some WD40 on the clutch arm and its better... again not perfect... Better this morning after the WD40 had chance to soak.. A lot smoother through the gears now... still grinds slightly into reverse but not everytime... Maybe more WD40 on the arm??? Its definatly ok to sell now anyway...
