Overall visual design. Fuel economy. And then best 4x4 ability of the soft roaders. Chose L series so that I can work on it, reliability and the ability to adapt it to run on a veg oil mix.

......... agree with spacemonkey, overall looks, all the mod cons inside (plus more!), and reasonably priced.

Yeah I like it's looks, all the little accessories you can buy, the capabilities in the snow and my factor was price. If my budget was better a disco would have been my choice, but for my first 4x4 I'm really pleased
I live in a town but needed something to tow for work and carry family and to be able to get me to the fire station no matter what weather. I like Discoverys but couldn't justify the size due to being a townie, there are to many idiots here in my town who insist on having a big 4x4!
I drive a defender for work and my boss has several that I have driven so based on my experience I dismissed them straight away.
My Dad had a Honda CRV and we all hated it (apart from being 100% reliable), I looked at the Nissan Xtrail but didn't like it.
After looking around and asking lots of questions a td4 freelander seemed to do what I needed with the added benefit that my wife would drive it so I could have a drink when on holiday!

Wanted a mk2 Rav4 auto but at the time my five grand budget would only buy an X-plate with over 100k on the clock.
Second choice was a Shogun Pinin auto till I went to look at a W-plate with only 42k. It was cheap, but I wouldn't have believed modern cars could have so much rust so it was dismissed immediately.
Third choice, the Freelander, suddenly was promoted to first & I found my 03-plate Td4 auto with 52k three years ago for £4,700 & I haven't looked back.

Bought one new in 2001 after finding it so much more capable than others around at the time and liked the styling and the fact it was a Land Rover, kept it for almost 3 years then bought a Disco TD5 then decided to downsize a bit and got a TD4 which we still have along with the 1.8 I got last year. All of which have been very reliable!

I love em. As an all round car come 4x4 they take some beating. Look good easy to drive roomy comfortable smooth and handle well - if you know how to look after them they are easy - everything is easy ish to get at and simple to fix - try saying that with some of the Jap stuff about.
Oh yes and it doesn't matter how old it is they still look good!
