Any updates on the tank guard.

I'll have FL2 ones in the next couple of weeks, as for the FL1 it'll be a while for them.
I'm trying to get various things done in time for Peterbrough as i'm hoping to get a stand there,so things like sump guards, exhaust guards, sliders, rear ladders, maybe even a light bar done in time. The tank guard would take away too much time right now.
After Peterbrough though, it'll be in the pipeline as i'll have most other things done.

Would you be able to make fool tank cradles? Several on ere want them and they're several hundred pounds to buy. Praps make a betterer shape one too, but still use the same fixing mounts.

Don't see why not, does it bolt through the floor of the car or onto the monocoque? If it bolts through the floor, i'd be best off sourcing one to copy the mountings from, then work out what can be improved and incorporate some protection into it

It some how bolts from underneath but I've never taken one oft. It's probably got a patent on it like the rest of the stuff so copying won't be allowed, but we could design our own which uses the same mounting holes. All it needs to do is mount and fold round the fool tank to support it. slight bash plate at the front if I remember correctly.

Was about to start a fred in the rust section but if we have a metal basher, shorry fabricator of our own, then best to give him the opportunity.

I'm a sheet metal worker by trade, but yeh, i hit things with hammers all the same :D

Would be grateful of the opportunity, i dont even need a perfect one to work from, as long as its intact to get the mounting positions from! Haven't got the time to take my guard off at the moment, trying to get other products ready for Peterborough, using my car as a test rig when they're made

I'll get mine on some ramps tomorrow and have a spy under it properly, see if i can work out how to do it.

How much extra protection would you want? Just some beefier bits under each side of the fuel tank and a deflector on the front?

From looking at some pic's, the standard cradle has 2 tubes which follow the curve of the tank. One on each side. The tank is located under the rear seats with a curve section in the middle to allow space for the prop shaft. there's 2 flat sections of metal which fold up in front of the fool tank. Not too sure what level of protection peeps would want, above the standard design. I guess they will want thick metal to protect against rocks, and angled so something they hit is pushed down under the tank as you pass over it.

Sounds roughly what i was thinking, the steel plates which go under the tank at each side to be thicker, longer and with an angled section at the front to deflect anything away from the tank.
I'll get a look at it and see what i can come up with, i cant see it being cheap, although it will be considerably cheaper than the main dealer new part, and will offer a better level of protection

According to something i've just read, there's 2 different versions, one up to chassis no 2A209830 and one for after...were there different mounting points or a different tank design or something?

Yep that's what we want. We're not eggspecting it to done at cost price. There's my finder's fee to start with. I tried to make guards etc some years ago but couldn't get enough commitment. I talked with a local company who were happy to receive a wooden thing to copy if I purchased a batch. If your set-up with tools and skills to do it then it's only right you should also profit from it. Under cutting what may or may not eggsist on the market is the way to go, if it can be done. If your happy to do it then we'll all support you. I appreciate the time thing. It's a lot to get going and the eggsperimental bit needs time to develop the ideas.

We need peeps to take pic's of their fool tank guards to find out. We could have a go at taking them oft if it's easy to do.

It's only 4 bolts to remove the guard, so should be easy to take off, one with a VIN before the number quoted and one with a VIN after the number quoted will be sufficient!

Yeah i appreciate that, too many people want too many things for next to nowt because the same thing for a defender costs 15 quid, but they often dont realise that defender stuff is often mass made and therefore cheaper...why do people think mantec stopped making all the stuff for? because the margins weren't there at their operational costs!

Someone posted up the other day about the main dealer cost, cant remember what they said it was. Would get the tube sections bent by a tube section bender so they're all identical and spot on. Then make the rest myself, get it zinc primered and painted, should stop the rust problem!

I will be under my heap soon so will have a go at the fool take cradle. Will make sure I support the fool tank as I wouldn't want it to go up in flames. If others could help with measurements too then that would be welcome.

edit: will need to wait a few weeks until it's empty as I filled it full of fool at the weekend. Hence it'll be lighter and easier to support when the cradles removed.

Have you made any light bars yet Simon? :)

I can make them literally half an hour after I work out how to fix to the metal join under the capping without drilling the roof!

Any ideas on this would be most welcome!

Is there a standard spotlight mounting bracket which would be used?

the roof bar light bar have been done before and I actually made a couple but could not find any thin rubber to put under the mounting plate and they go under the roof bars on a 5 door

Yeah I'm trying to work out the mountings for a 3 door, I've had a couple of ideas that I'm going to work on today, see if they'll work!
