Hi, last weekend i was changing the timing belt on my 98 1.8 Freelander with automatic adjuster pully, and i came up against a problem. Basically every time i adjusted the adjuster pully with the spring pointing to the marker, as i tightened the nut, the pointer would move. So i repeated and in the end had to have the pointer just befor the mark in order to get it spot on. Is this normal, or do i have a faulty adjuster? ( It was a new item). I'm just worried that my timing belt tension is incorrectly tensioned.

If its the pointer type with spring then it will be the manual tensioner.

The tensioner is on a cam, so as to prevent over tightening (so they say anyway).

Have you kept the allen key in place whilst tigthening the bolt to 65Nm?

The arm tends to move a bit when the belt is in motion, just due to tension variation depending on cam lobe positions.

Rotate the pulley by hand using a 22mm wrench when you have completed the belt tensioner, you'll see the arm move slightly.
