Hi - I am planning to buy a 1-2 year old Freelander 2 in the next few months. I read in some reviews the 2.2D TD4 (150bhp) is underpowered; in others it says it is perfectly OK for normal use. Other reviews say the SD4 (190bhp) is over-powered for the auto box.

I would be glad of some advice from anyone who has driven both. Is the TD4 adequate for 'normal' stuff - not intending to do any serious off-roading or towing particularly heavy loads? Enough to get off at junctions OK, over taking etc.?

Hi Ed,

We have a td4 freelander 2 manual and find it more than adequate for anything we need to do with it. If I'm just pootling about on my own, I tend to give it a bit of stick, and it performs really well, especially considering its weight. It quite happily keeps up with all the other traffic, with loads in reserve should the need or opportunity arise.

Have also towed a large caravan with it, and I wouldn't say it struggled at all. 1st time I towed with it, I was really impressed, the only noticeable difference was in fuel consumption.

The whole outfit seems really stable to tow with, had to do a full on emergency stop with it, from 60 to 0 as fast as possible (learner pulled out of a layby onto dual carriageway, then saw my flashing headlights so stopped dead in lane 1, couldn't move lanes as there was traffic in lane 2). The whole thing pulled up safely and easily, with narry a twitch, felt really re-assured.

The only slight downside is fuel economy. On a run, can manage high 30's, or even low 40's if I drive at 60, but use the power or tow with it, or round town, can be as low as 28.
