Freelander 1.8 Petrol '54' plate.

I'm getting overheating problems on the above. I suspected the thermostat so ordered a NSTPEL10016 from Paddocks.

Started the strip down this afternoon and I have stripped off the full thermostat and housing assembly expecting to be able to open up the housing.

Thing is I suspect the housing assembly is sealed, I can't see a way in to it without causing damage to it.

Are these style units supposed to be opened, if so how? Bayonet turn, prise open, screw off?

What I bought looked more like the pic below though, which looks slightly different to the one I can see inside my housing.

Ah it's OK forget all of the above I think I found my answer. I bought the wrong part.

Looks like Paddocks and at least one other supplier only list one part and don't mention different VIN # requirements.

, there are many reasons why it might and you want to be sure you're fixing the right bit. But well done figuring out te part.

Not wrong as such. Modified thermostat.

The one you show in the bottom picture, is the one that sits into the coolant pump and onto the metal pipe at the back of your engine. there is a blanking mod for this to bypass it.

The bypass for that thermostat is designed to be used if you fit the modified coolant hoses onto the radiator, which houses the thermostat listed in the top pic.

Drive for around 1-2 minutes. Needle is off the gauge and red warning light is on. First time I was able to pull over, pop the bonnet, do a few visual checks, water level in reservoir was 1/2" below minimum. I grabbed the top radiator hose and 'pumped it' a few times. Got back in and started up and temp was normal again, sitting in the middle where it normally gets to during normal driving.

Second time happened at almost the same point after 1-2 minutes driving, pulled over, switched off. Sat for 30 secs, switched on again and temp was normal again.

It has been 1 week since the last incident.

My brother told me he had a similar incident years ago in his Escort and it was the stat. He said it was easy to do so give that a go first. That is the sole basis for why I attempted this change first

I've since found that Freelanders with VIN #'s 1A0000001 onwards need a part like the first pic I posted, does that sound about right to you. I currently have one fitted, their appears to be a thermostat inside but I can't get it open. So I guess I should be buying the full stat and housing if it is this that is actually broken.
