Hi All

Not sure if I'm doing this right or not but Hello, I'm a new freelander owner for my sins

I have a 1.8 2002 Freelander which is causing me a few problems. He keeps overheating, at first I thought it was the cap on the expansion bottle which I replaced along with the bottle, it still overheated then I bought a new thermostat and fitted, still overheating. My temp gauge reads normal, until it blows its top and then go's straight up to the red and from what I can tell my fans don't kick in at all. I've tested the fans and they both work with a direct power source, so the last 2 things I can think is the temperature gauge sensor or the relay. The car runs fine as long as you are moving once I get stuck in any traffic he starts to boil,

Moved to avoid some of the 'burn it' comment you'll inevitably get.

Have you considered burning it?
 
Hmmmm! 1.8 temp gauge normal chucks water out! Hmmmm! There's an outside chance it's your head gasket!! Try doing a search on it ;)
 
Are you losing coolant, is the fluid in the expansion tank contaminated? What can you smell when it's overheating?
 
You say you've only just got it - when and where did you get it from?

Were you told about overheating problems when you bought it?

Yes all bled OK and will run on tick over sitting on my drive for a couple of hours, I know this was a bit extreme but I wanted to check that the fans kicked in at some point, but they didn't he just blew, tried to check it with the A/C on full but the fans still didn't work, tried unplugging the sensor still no joy. but I did disconnect to power to the fans and put a direct feed to to them and they worked fine so I know they work, just not sure if changing the temp sensor or relay would solve this problem

Feel the rad, is it hot all over?

If not it could be either thermostat or waterpump - both are pretty easy to sort.

of course we can all diagnose over the web but just my two penneth. I have generally found the head gasket issue to be over egged and I have never had one go in the 5 1.8's I have owned over the years.
