Was giving my newly acquired Defender a clean up and found this in the car.. Is this an actual part for the car or just a random bit of metal?

Thats the foot plate for e screw jack

On van back/pick ups it attaches to the rear bulkhead behind the front seats .

Don't know what motor you have got, but on the front of the bulkhead behind the front seats on mine there are some little brackets with rubber bands that hold the tool roll and jack.

Only of use if you actually carry the jack in the Landy too, surprising how many people don't!

And the jacks only any good if your front and rear jacking tubes havnt rotted ..... Most have

4 foot Hi-Lift fits behind the seats too.

Yeh I've never been sure where to keep it. It just tends to float around the landy either in the 2nd row footwell or the boot. Normally making a racket pinballing off from one side of the tub to the other as I drive along.

I carry the factory jack but don't even know where the jacking points are. I have a bottle jack out of a disco with me in any case.

As I said earlier, ther should be rubber bands t secure the jack and tool roll.

Front jacking points are on the ends of the chassis rails under the bumper, they should have rubber plugs in when not in use. Rear are two holes in the rear crossmember.

Factory jacking points are the 2.5cm diameter tubes in the rear xmember and if you pull the rubber bungs out of the front of the chassis rails there are tubes there too....

But as i said , many of the tubes are rotten.

Good to know a 4 ft fits as thats where mines will be living in the cab once its rebuilt. Those screw jacks take forever and i wouldnt thank anyone for one

Only used the standard jack a few times, felt pretty unstable to me.

Never used mine tried it in the garden and thought poke that., used to carry a trolley jack in the van back , but i got a truck cab now.

Like you say unstable and my rear cross member was rotten i didnt dare risk it.

Get a bottle jack. I carry a farm jack and a bottle and in normal circumstances I'll always use the bottle!

Mines a 110 SW, so no bulkhead...but perhaps there's something under the rear seats.

Mine chassis not too bad for the year actually but it feels like a bottle jack would be a lot lighTer and easier to keep in the car.

Lighter, easier, quicker, can be used on other cars... Just make sure you get one with an axle cradle (Disco,RR, older Landies, Mercedes Sprinter etc.).
