I found a belt with teeth albeit fairly toothless hanging from the engine bay. I have also noticed the battery light on in the car. Could it be an alternator belt??
All so i have been informed by an over enthusiastic halfords man that they have two belts?? is this ture
I have a 200tdi engine on a 110

yep 2 belts......1 from crank round water pump and powersteering pump and tother from PS pump to alt........its the second one you want....you have to slaken off adjustment for both belts and slip the other off as the alt belt is behind
 
200tdi has two belts - alternator belt is seperate from water pump and PAS pump. Sounds like your alternator belt has snapped.
 
Cheers. I have a strange looking cylindar above the althernator with a big hose running of it. Any ideas what this is??its about a foot and a half long and 8 inches in diametersand the end opens.

Not a wind up. i new to all this. If its an air filter how does the air get in. Its got a small opening at the end almost enough to get my little finger in.

If you take a look at it again you'll see that there are 2 hoses one at the end one on the side.

Like this air comes thru the wing pipe and out the end pipe.

Yes, that's the air box. Looks like a dodgy TDI conversion though!
