My '99 DHSE (with superchip) is flaring between 2nd & 3rd gears. Started when I accelerated sharply to shake off a tail-gater. :doh:
I have changed the transmission oil and filter and added a couple of bottles of lucas transmission fix but so far no improvement. I have done about 35 miles since adding the snake oil, do I need to do more mileage to notice a difference?
will there be a gradual improvement or have I got a major problem?
anything else I can try? maybe another oil change?

More mileage needed - Datatek has mentioned a couple of hundred miles before noticable results.

If no change after that, I would say drain the oil and check the condition of it...
 
I have now done over 500 miles and there does not seem to be much of an improvement. I have not been doing many long runs as I have spent some time in and out of hospital. I have been driving it gently when I do drive it, should I maybe just drive normally? I am thinking of changing the oil and filter again, do you think that will help?

Hi Bill, sorry to hear you have been unwell. It took a long hard run before mine improved when we went back to the UK. If you change the oil, stick a couple of bottles of Lucas in before you re-fill. Mines still OK although there are occasional hard changes now:)
 
Sorry but those were my first symptoms. Tried the Lucas bit twice but it steadily got worse and I stuck a new box and TC in it. Some you win.

Plan to change mine at some point for a ZF4HP24:D But you know how it is, if it aint broke, don't fix it:D:D

Yes it will, with some minor modifications but hang on for a minute, this is exactly what DATA is intending doing and he'll have researched it thoroughly. He'll be back in a bit, at his age when you've got to go, you've got to go.

Yes Bill it will, several have done it. You need the diesel torque convertor or an uprated one from Ashcrofts, the diesel bell housing and you may have to change the oil pump depending on the age of the ZF4HP24. Your existing transfer box fits.
Emmotts have a couple at the moment for around £150, my problem is the cost of getting one to France:(

I will try another Lucas oil treatment with a new filter first and give it a good long, hard run.

The more fresh oil you put it the more chance of slipping leave it now until unbearable then its new parts time . Save your money and time. .

Ill bring you one over if you cover fuel and up me up for a few nights :)

Absolutely not so, the flareing is, as far as I can determine, due to sticking valves in the valve block, new oil with it's fresh detergents + Lucas is what cleans up the valve block and restores normal function. The clutches are not slipping as such, just slow engaging. I could still tow 3 tonnes with mine even when it had the problem as long as I did manual shifts, if it was worn clutches, no way would it have coped.

Absolutely correct. Change should be seamless, as one clutch is disengaged and the next one activated. Almost simultaneously. Flairing is caused when the first clutch disengages and the second one is slow to engage. Caused by sticky shuttle valves. :)

He has already put in oil filter and Lucas fix and now you want him to put more in .
What a waste ! He hasn't even done any milage yet.

When you put in stuff like that you should always go for a good motorway run get everytng hot, not down the shops for milk.

I think you are right about the mileage except I have done the mileage but in small trips. Unfortunately I have been otherwise engaged and unable to go very far, so down to the shops for milk etc has almost been the case.
However, I am going to follow Datatek's advise and try another lucas oil treatment and then take yours and Data's advise and give it a good long run (or 2) with some welly :crazy_driver: to see if that does some good.

Taking it for a long drive at constant speed won't do any good other than warm the fluid. When the fluid is warm you need to be driving with plenty of changes to exercise the shuttle valves.
