look at the base of the mirror that goes on the screen for a small set screw if there then back it off and then put on and tighten
P38 interior mirror just clips onto boss attached to windscreen. Mirror is positioned from bottom and slips on upwards. Make sure you have the correct mirror, there are two types, one pre 99 and in mid 99 the mirror and boss changed.
The later one engages at bottom first then is pushed onto boss at top edge.
The later one engages at bottom first then is pushed onto boss at top edge.

What year is your car,if it's earlier than 99 maybe someone has had a new screen in and fitted the later version. I have a later type mirror sat in front of me and the internals of that look like they would fit over a 20 p shaped boss. I bought it in error, mine is the earlier version.

The twenty pence shape mirror is the BMW boss. The mirror twists on clockwise about 1/8 of a turn. The back of the mirror looks like a triangle of wire inside.
The later one then, like the one i have. The earlier one had to be pulled down to remove or pushed up to refit.
