its the latest reviews flips,early days yet wiv the freelander 2 ,new engines un traction gonna have ter wait fer issues,bout 7 years ago i used ta drive a ford exploder v6 great motor [engine] but only got about 18mpg outer it, however yer can pick these up for next ta noffink now. . . .great motor if you lpg it,loads er room ,but reet crap orft road, took it orft once never agin. . .got towed off by dare i say it. . .er defender tractor. . .er very elpfull chap, i bought one after that,but got the gaylander as its a lot better on motoways,nearly bought the v6,didnt know bout all the issues then, thets why this site is soo good,tells it as is. . . . .:)
 
so this reviewing new motors - ok.
yup as yu said reserve judgement on fl2 for a while. I am surprised the X-Trail came as high as it did - wot is it - a 10 year old design now?

MHM - your relay and wiring kit looks a little puny.

Would be ok for small current charging, but any large current draw and the wire would melt.

Sorry to appear negative.

Thanks for all the advice (espcially G13SJC!), I didn't realise how simple split charge systems were! The following site has LOADS of info:

I wired mine in today.

I put a sealed leisure battery in the boot (you don't want it venting gas into the loadspace when it's charging!) in a battery box and ratched strapped down.

I (made &) wired in the split charge system as recommended, but added two connectors, 1 x heavy duty connector to the charge & ground lines (to make the battery removable - (Pegasus - 175 amp Auxiliary Battery Connector Set with Handle). I also added an 'auxillaries' connector and wired all the cigar lighters dotted around the car (except the one on the dash) back to this connector - this means (I think!) that they will primarily drain the leisure battery and leave the main battery to run everything else.

If you connect the split charge relay upto the 'No Charge' dash light (Brown/Yellow cable out of the back of the instrument panel), then it disconnects the slave battery when you start the engine.... meaning that it doesn't use your leisure battery to start the engine - they're not designed for that! I also added an emergency switch to override the 'no charge' line - in case of emergency!

It all seems to be working well - cheers for the pointers :)
