Going to try and fit a new lift pump to my 300tdi Disco tomorrow, I haven't done one before so was reading the haynes manual tonight, it says to make sure the pump operating lever engages correctly with the camshaft, but doesn't say how or what the correct engagement is? Also how can you see when you fit the new one the position of the camshaft?

Also how much fuel can I expect to leak when I remove the old pump and is it really necessary to remove the fuel pipes to the injectors to gain access?

you will loose very little fuel ,you will feel it going on correctly as you compress spring on lever

you change your lift pump without disconnecting the injector pipes it is a bit of a fiddle thoughto lose less fuel dis connect the pipe to the fuel filter too
