Looks like it's going at an angle!!,I take it it's the VCU carrier bearing?,is there a rumbling sound coming from the gearbox tunnel area?

its just a mud shield ,protect orange bearing seal

Exactly right
the washer is a thrower. At the moment it's pressing against the bearing dust shield which isn't correct!!

I am proper wound up about this now!!!!!!!! I am tempted to say sod it and leave it as it is!!!! Is there a real need to go pulling the bearings off the VCU and risk damaging them just to change the protectors around? I would go as far as saying the bearings look better protected with them that way around!!!!

stop worrying about nothing, are you really likely to be that deep in mud ?
there are more important things to be concerened about when you have a freelander

You can get the bearings oft and re-use if ok but you have to be careful not to damage them or the end of the vcu. Carefully soaking the vcu to bearing surface only and letting it soak in (not into the bearings) with just the right amount of fluid worked for me. If it were mine I'd just leave it as it is.
Thanks guys I think I will leave them as they are if there is a good chance that the bearings will come off damaged. Has just wound me up that the guy didn't think to check how they fitted!! I mean why not just jump on the internet and check???? I am not really off roading much more pulling the caravan across the fields.

If it were mine and i'd paid a garage to fit them, i'd take it back and get them to fit them correctly and cover out of pocket costs to.
As it is now, there is a chace that the prop to VCU joint could loosen as the bearing isn't being clamped through the inner bearing race. This is because the convex washer is pressing into the bearing dust shield. In time the dust shield will collapse causing the bearing to fail anyway. The thrower is an integral part of the bearing protection assembly, It helps protect the bearing from road spray, dust/ salt, as well as off road water and mud!! Getting the bearings refitted correctly should do less damage than leaving them as they are!!

Ok so I took it back to them and showed them the problem. They are quite happy to take it all off and re fit the mud slingers. He did say he would probably have to destroy the old ones to get the bearings off. So I need to know where and if I can find 4x mud slingers on their own. Called foundry 4x4 who are going to see if they can find me some but just in case..... Any ideas?
Also any advice I can pass on for getting those bearings off safely to avoid damage would be great.
