Hi all.
Out of all the 4X4 motors available, I chose a 2001 Freelander S and even though the usual problems that come with a car of that age are happening (CV joints, corroded brake pipes etc.) the problems are a LOT less than with other cars of the same age. In short, it's a great car to drive and appears to be a lot more durable. I find myself wondering why I never chose Land Rover before. I used to work in the care sector, the timber sector and various other sectors, including driving, and living in Scotland with all the associated winter weather conditions, having a Landy then would have been great. I'm looking forward to getting out and about with my Freelander and actually enjoying those conditions for a change! I'm not a professional mechanic, but I like to do my own car work, so I will probably be asking a lot of related questions in the forums, probably connected to the three amigos for starters!
Anyway, that's me. Looking forward to talking with you all.

Hello Bowyer and welcome. You'll find loads of Freelander advice here, Lord Hippo knows his stuff for one I reckon.
Also, expect a bit of good natured stick from drivers of Discos, Fenders et al. If banter is likely to offend then steer clear of AG :)
Cheers

Hey Turktowner, t'ank'ee kindly for the welcome. Good natured stick and banter is what makes life interesting, as long as it stays friendly! And I'll take all the advice I can get, I'm a bit "duh!" when it comes to Landy systems!

Sure thing. Some of the old timers can get a bit cranky coz new owners ask questions that have been asked before (often) and the
answers can be found by searching the forums. I reckon they're just low on cocoa and don't really mean it, it's the interaction that makes it worth while for both parties.
Hope you're enjoying your LR as much as I do (1998 D90 300tdi CSW)

I am indeed, but I'll enjoy it much more once it's all fixed up and ticketyboo. As for the old timers' cocoa, can't help with that, but I have a nice pair of plush slippers they can have to ease their aching feet. Might help with the crankiness.....maybe? :)

Welcome Bowyer
I was like you back in the autumn of 2016 when I too bought my first Land Rover. It too was a Freebie 2001 but a 1.8ES. Took it straight out to Sweden, where we were living at the time and it has been a solid motor ever since. No rust so far and no major problems. Second one joined it last year, 2006 TD4 HSE auto face-lifted Freelander. Current project is the little blighter attached to this message, lots of fettling needed there.
Never looked back so I wish you good luck with yours.

Thank you SwedishPete, Your current project looks as though it just needs a dusting off! Mine, I'm afraid , needs a little more TLC. Sills starting to go, back door with a rusty hole under the handle, a corroded hole in the offside wishbone, rough nearside wheel bearing and a multitude of other hidden little nasties! Admittedly, nothing I didn't expect given its age, but apart from that nothing too major to deal with thank the gods of Landy mythology! But all the best in tackling yours. I find a completed project most satisfying! I've attached a picture of mine. At least, I hope I have!
