Hi there.

I'm taking my driving test in march of this year and will be turning 18 as of june.
I am thinking of buying a defender 90 does anyone know what the insurance is likely to cost?
was thinking of getting a 1993 defender 90 2.5 tdi pick-up.

I'm 19 and still can't get affordable insurance.
For my 2.25 series 2 that would do 50mph flat out the cheapest quote I got was £3500.
When I got a defender as a project I thought I'd look into that. Rang up the big firms and they won't insure under 21 year olds on 4x4's.

My advice based on experience is get a Land Rover if it's at the right price and improve it to be a reliable daily driver. But buy a heap of junk crap car to get you about.

The problem with a Land Rover as a first car is expensive insurance, expensive on fuel, expensive tax and if it goes wrong you'll have no money to fix it and you don't want to spend all that money on tax and insurance to have a broken Land Rover sat on the drive.

I've had many a chat with insurance firms as to why a defender costs so much to insure but it doesn't seem like there's any one true answer. It's a load of rubbish. If you get a series landy you might have more luck as many classic insurers are doing young driver policies.

Before purchasing anything get some quotes.

these insurance firms should realize our old landrovers are much safer than some young ricer fag in a little saxo trying to hit 100 down the a12 unlike an old defender that would struggle at 80.
 
my 110 hardtop 300tdi cost me just over a grand on my first year with all mods declared agreed price tool coverage (used for work) with all work related driving covered aswell (so not just insured to commute) at first my quotes were all £2500 upwards with no tool coverage etc but i rung round and got it across its an old defender that doesn't go fast isnt gunna be chaved and hooned round the local industrial estate as i dont want it to break lol and i finally started getting reasonable quotes also i couldnt get insurance near this price for any normal van or pick up but i did find it was cheaper for me to insure a hardtop defender on van/commercial insurance instead of a truck cab or county on standard car insurance hope some of that helps
 
but my insurance is still expensive as im basically insured to drive for any reason including delivering goods with high mileage and im a type 1 diabetic which effects the price a fair bit:mad:
 
Welcome to the mad house, give the bloke a message from Adrian Flux a pm also ask him which variant is cheaper hardtop or truck cab
 
Try google insurance comparison. Let you change the car you're quoting for without going through the whole rigmarole every time.
I'm a fair bit older than you, but got my license last year, and the cheapest LR to insure was a 93-94 Disco, value of 1250. Might be worth a look?

just done an online quote and apparently i can insure a 1994 defender 90 soft top tdi for £2165.29p and i even get a free toy. ;)

It's still quite a bit of money, but if you've got it and want a Defender go for it! :) I'm guessing that was on confused.com and you got the Brian toy? :)

yeah it was confused.com there is no way that I'm paying 2500 knowing that people are paying 900 pounds at my age ! suppose its about time to do some ringing around :)

Avoid any companies that would want to fit a 'black box' to lower your insurance...I haven't got any personal experience with them, but the few people that I know with them fitted said its cost them more over the long run as you get penalised for late night driving and stuff.
 
Black boxes can't be used on early defenders as the boxes require ecu input. As in the speedo needs to be digital.

I have a black box on my car I don't drive like an old woman. I drive like every teenage guy. And my policy has come down every year so far. Then even includes a spin out that occurred didn't crash or anything no damage and no one else around. Plus I've driven at 3am on a few occasions with no issues. Personally I don't think the boxes do anything.
 
i've heard they even track how steady you drive. i also believe they do nothing.
my friend has a black box in his jag and we haven't had a problem driving back from a days shooting like your average teenage ricer
