Hi guys i need to tap into that wealth of p38 knowledge that is out there, iv'e just about completed swapping a bmw engine into my p38 and as part of the process i swapped the tops over on the fip, the problem i have is that i need to slide this backwards or forwards to set the idle speed, but with the inlet manifold bolted on its not easy, i know that it will run without the manifold fitted but will running it with the inlet temp sensor and the vacuum hose disconnected cause me any problems with the idle speed? whilst i'm at it on the bmw cylinder head there is an unused two pin sensor right at the front of the head, could i use this to connect an aftermarket coolant temp gauge to? any advice will be gratefully received, thanks:cool::cool::cool:

Take it this is pre EGR. Just run it without the manifold IAT is no problem. There is no vac pipe, it is a pressure pipe to MAP sensor. ECU temp sensor needs to be connected. With bolts just nipped. Move top until engine runs then let it warm for a few minutes. Then tap pump top back and forth until you get a rock steady 750 RPM. Make sure you change the temp sensors for the Land Rover ones the BMW ones may not be compatible.

It is a non egr engine and i,m glad you mentioned the sensors, as iv'e not changed them over to the range rover ones, any idea if i can use the spare two pin one at the front of the head to connect a proper temp gauge? as i'm going to be paranoid about the damn thing overheating again, if mrs lucky ever finds out how much iv'e spent on this so far i'l be a dead p38 fan! thanks for your help:):):):)

As i said use the temp senders, gauge and ECU from your old engine. Not aware of temp sender at front of head.

There is one at the front Tony, over the FIP, I think it's for the gauge, the one in the middle is for the ECU or vice versa, the one at the back of the head, if fitted, is for operating the aircon fans in an overheat siruation.
As Wammers said, fit the senders from your old engine or replace with new LR parts.

Side of head near front behind pump.Yes. Side of head near middle. Yes. Side of head towards rear. Yes. But he said on front of head. Or maybe i am being pedantic. :D:D:)

Three only.:)

From AMC's web site.

Sorry guys my description wasn't to clever, the sensor is located above the fip as has been rightfully pointed out, if memory serves me right its white in colour and has two electrical connections inside, i might plug a normal temp gauge into it and see what reading i get when(if) i get it running, thanks for your help guys.

You should be using the Land rover loom so just stick the Land rover sender in and have a nice working dash temp gauge. Leave the BMW one in and have a nice none working dash gauge.

will double check when i get home from work this morning but i'm sure its white, if its not for temp gauge, what does it do?

The electrical set up of the BMW is differant to the rr just unscrew your old one and put it in the new one simples why chance it
On somthing that is so inportant !
Or do you want to change your head gasket as well if it boils :)

If you don't use the correct sensors and wire them in as they are meant to be you will be changing your name to unluckymark. There isa third hole towards the rear of the head where you can put a sensor for an additional gauge if that's what you want, but there is nothing wrong with the dash gauge, it works fine.
